The RAF has been designated Lead Command for space, and the headquarters name now says so.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The claim is not arbitrary. The RAF stood up Britain&rsquo;s ballistic missile early warning system at RAF Fylingdales in 1963 and launched SKYNET 1A, the country&rsquo;s first military communications satellite, in 1969. But it is also a domain of growing strategic competition. It has fast become an operational domain in its own right, and is vital to our ambition to develop and mature the integrated force. Control of the air, the thing the RAF exists to do, now depends on satellites for navigation, timing, communications, targeting and intelligence. Lose access to the space layer and a modern air force degrades very quickly.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">From Lancasters to satellites, on the same site<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>The building this is all run from has an unusually direct lineage.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Bomber Command was formed in 1936 at RAF Uxbridge in west London. As tension in Europe rose, the government wanted it somewhere harder for an enemy to find and bomb, and in 1938 it moved to RAF High Wycombe, tucked into the woods of the Chiltern Hills near Walter&rsquo;s Ash and Naphill. It stayed there for thirty years.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>In 1968 Bomber Command merged with Fighter Command to become Strike Command, still at High Wycombe, controlling the RAF&rsquo;s bombers and fighters. In 2007 Strike Command merged with Personnel and Training Command to form Air Command, the single headquarters for the whole service. UK Space Command was formed underneath it in 2021.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Nineteen years after the last renaming, the same headquarters became Air &amp; Space Command. The site that once ran the Lancaster force now runs satellite operations.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Britain is late to a European trend<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>The RAF is not first. France renamed its air arm the Arm&eacute;e de l&rsquo;Air et de l&rsquo;Espace in 2020. Spain followed with the Ejercito del Aire y del Espacio in 2022, and the Netherlands became the Royal Netherlands Air and Space Force in 2025.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Britain has gone a step less far. Those countries renamed the service itself; the RAF has renamed only its headquarters. The Royal Air Force remains the Royal Air Force, which given a hundred and eight years of brand equity is probably a sensible restraint.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RS8xWm3q5Ok\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n<p style=\"font-size:13px;color:#777;text-align:center;font-style:italic\">Background on UK Space Command, which continues to sit under the newly renamed Air &amp; Space Command.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">What actually changes<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>Structurally, not much on day one. Air &amp; Space Command continues to run UK Space Command and continues to lead the RAF Groups that deliver air power and train personnel. UK Space Command remains a joint organisation with Royal Navy, British Army and Civil Service personnel alongside RAF people.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>What changes is where space sits in the hierarchy. Smyth&rsquo;s argument is that space power now has to be planned and delivered at the top level of military leadership, in the same way as every other domain, rather than being handled by a specialist enclave further down the organisation. Putting it in the name of the headquarters is how a military organisation makes that stick.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Smyth is a reasonable person to do it. He was the first officer to hold the post of Director Space UK, became Deputy Commander (Operations) in 2022, a role retitled Air &amp; Space Commander in 2023, and went on to Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff before becoming Chief of the Air Staff.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The motto, of course, does not need changing.
