At 13:15, Poland’s Operational Command announced that an unidentified object had crossed from the direction of Belarus. A duty Mi-24 was already on its way to look.

At 14:17, ninety-two minutes after the first restriction, the command posted the answer. It was a large flock of birds.

It is tempting to file that under comic relief. It should not be. The reason a bird flock now triggers a helicopter launch and an airspace closure on Poland’s eastern border is that over the past twelve months almost everything else that came across it was real.

Quick Facts — Sunday 6 September 2026

12:45 CEST: Airspace east of Lublin toward the border withdrawn from civil traffic

13:15 CEST: Operational Command announces suspected violation from the direction of Belarus

Aircraft launched: A duty Mil Mi-24 attack helicopter

14:17 CEST: Verification complete — the radar returns were a large flock of birds

Civil impact: None. The reason it is not is a list.

On the night of 9–10 September 2025, at least nineteen Russian drones entered Polish airspace, many of them via Belarus. Up to four were shot down — most, notably, by Royal Netherlands Air Force F-35s operating alongside Polish F-16s, an Italian AEW&C aircraft and a Belgian A330 MRTT. It was the first time a NATO country had destroyed Russian assets since February 2022. Warsaw Chopin, Modlin, Rzeszów and Lublin all closed. A stray AMRAAM fired by a Polish F-16 came down on a house roof at Wyryki-Wola without hurting anyone.

Polish F-16s did the shooting on the night of 9–10 September 2025, alongside Dutch F-35s. Nine days later three Russian MiG-31s spent twelve minutes inside Estonian airspace and Estonia invoked Article 4 as well.

Since then: balloons crossing from Belarus over Christmas 2025 and again on three consecutive nights in early February 2026, which the Polish command described as another attempt at reconnaissance and at checking the reaction of Polish air defences. A Russian Kh-101 cruise missile detonating roughly a hundred kilometres inside Poland at Tarnawa-Kolonia on the night of 29–30 July 2026, leaving a crater ten metres across. NATO’s North Atlantic Council formally assigning Russia full responsibility for Polish and Romanian airspace violations on 12 August.
