On 16 September that stopped being true.

OAG published Megahubs 2026 and Istanbul is first. Not first in Europe. Atlanta and Dubai would win that every year without trying.

OAG counts every possible connection between an arriving and a departing flight inside a six-hour window, where at least one of the two is international, and then weighs that against the number of destinations the airport serves. The result is a measure of how useful an airport is as a place to change planes.

It is measured on a single day, Sunday 2 August 2026, the busiest day of the year for global aviation. Istanbul scored 265.4, the highest of any airport in the world.

Here is the full top ten.

Istanbul Won on Reach

Look at the destinations column and the story jumps out. Istanbul serves 337 destinations. Nothing else comes close except Frankfurt on 310 and Chicago O’Hare on 308. Heathrow, for all its weight, serves 227.

That is the geography doing its work. Istanbul sits on the hinge between Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa, and Turkish Airlines has spent two decades building a network that flies to more countries than any other airline. Eighty per cent of the capacity at the airport is Turkish Airlines. When one carrier controls that much of an airport and is deliberately building a transfer machine, the connection maths gets very good very quickly.

One of the piers at Istanbul Airport. It Was Pushed.

Heathrow’s potential connections on the busiest day dropped 6% year on year. OAG is explicit about the reason: the ongoing disruption to Middle East schedules. Heathrow’s capacity to that region was down 25% this August compared with last.

That is worth sitting with. An airport in west London lost the top spot in a global connectivity ranking largely because of a war several thousand miles away. Hub connectivity is a chain, and when a large set of links goes missing the whole structure loses value, even if the airport itself changed nothing.

OAG notes the same effect pulled down Dubai and Doha, and any other airport that had built its business on heavy Middle East connectivity. Scheduled capacity for the region in August 2026 was 5.7% below August 2025.

“The 2026 rankings reflect a global aviation landscape that is still recalibrating after significant disruption. Istanbul’s rise to the top reflects the strength of Turkish Airlines’ network and the airport’s geographic position as a connecting hub between east and west.”
John Grant — Chief Analyst, OAG, 16 September 2026

The Quieter Result: China Is Back

The headline is Istanbul. The more consequential finding is buried further down the table.

Shanghai Pudong has climbed from 19th to 14th. Guangzhou Baiyun has gone from 36th to 19th, a jump of seventeen places. Hong Kong is back in the top 20 at 20th, up from 22nd. OAG’s reading is blunt: the post-pandemic adjustment in the Chinese market is now complete.

Asia Pacific now holds eight of the top 20 places and 17 of the top 50. Kuala Lumpur is fourth globally and the most connected airport in Asia, and it also tops the low-cost connectivity index with nearly 15,000 possible low-cost connections. Across Southeast Asia, low-cost carriers now account for 51% of all seats against a global average of 34%.

There is a European footnote too. Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen, the city’s other airport, climbed from 29th to 21st. Istanbul did not just win the top spot. It put two airports in the global top 21.

A look at how Istanbul built its hub, published a few months before it took the top spot.

What It Actually Means for You

Connectivity indices are industry scorekeeping, but they cash out in something concrete: how many places you can reach with one stop, and how short that stop can be.

On that measure Istanbul is now the best place in the world to change planes, and Heathrow is not, and the gap was opened by events neither airport controlled. Whether it holds depends on something equally outside their control, which is when Middle East schedules come back.

Sources: OAG Megahubs 2026; OAG press release, 16 September 2026; iGA Istanbul Airport

Frequently Asked Questions

<details open>
Which is the most connected airport in the world in 2026?

Istanbul Airport (IST).
