The canopy stays down. The pilot stays strapped in. The engine keeps running at idle while somebody walks a live fuel hose up to the aircraft and plugs it into a jet that is, by any normal safety standard, an ignition source with a person inside it.

This is hot-pit refuelling, and the reason air forces accept the risk is arithmetic. Shut the engine down and the aircraft needs a full set of post-flight and pre-flight checks before it can go again. Leave it running and you skip almost all of them.

Add weapons to the same stop and it becomes an integrated combat turn: refuel and rearm without ever shutting down. It is the closest thing military aviation has to a Formula One pit stop, and it has become central to how the US Air Force now plans to fight.

Quick Facts

What it is: Refuelling an aircraft immediately after landing with its engines still running

Also called: Hot pit, hot refuelling; combined with rearming it becomes an integrated combat turn

Why: Eliminates the shutdown, post-flight and restart inspections that a cold turn requires

Typical saving: The USAF has reported ground time cut by about two thirds against a conventional turn

Main hazards: Static discharge, sparks, fuel spillage and vapour near a running engine

Before the pit: The aircraft passes through a de-arm area where weapons are made safe and brakes are checked for heat

Currency: At the 114th Fighter Wing, hot-pit training is flown twice every six months with an annual quality-assurance evaluation

Doctrinal home: Agile Combat Employment, the USAF concept for dispersed operations from austere fields

What a cold turn costs you

Shutting an engine down is not free. It triggers a sequence of inspections, servicing checks and a restart procedure, and every one of those steps consumes people and time on a flight line that may already be under pressure. Restart cycles also put wear on components that a continuously running engine never sees.

Hot-pitting deletes most of that. The aircraft never leaves the running state, so the checks tied to shutdown and start simply do not apply. The US Air Force has reported turn times cut by roughly two thirds where the technique is used, which on a training day means more sorties from the same jets and the same crews.

“It allows for quicker refueling and shorter down time because it eliminates other inspections needed if the aircraft is shut down.”
Tech. It first goes to a de-arm or cursory area where weapons crews safe the stores and crew chiefs check the wheels for hot brakes. Only once that is clear does it move to the hot pad.

On the pad the aircraft is chocked and grounded, the fuel operator connects the single-point receptacle, and the crew chief stays in visual contact with the pilot throughout. The pilot keeps the engine at idle and keeps hands clear of anything that could move a control surface. A fire extinguisher sits a few steps away and the ground crew wear ear defence because the engine is running the entire time.

An F-35A taxiing out after a hot-pit refuel during Astral Knight 2024. US Air Force photo; use does not imply endorsement.

The hazards are the obvious ones, taken seriously. Static discharge, sparks from equipment, and fuel spillage near a hot engine and hot brakes. The mitigations are procedural rather than clever: bonding and grounding, controlled flow, tight limits on who may be in the area, and a rehearsed abort.

Add weapons and it becomes an integrated combat turn

The integrated combat turn is the full version: fuel and ordnance loaded in the same stop, engine still running, aircraft back in the air without a shutdown. It compresses what would be a multi-hour regeneration into a single ground event, and it is practised precisely because the alternative is a jet sitting still at an airfield somebody may be shooting at.

The same logic scales down to a forward arming and refuelling point, where a C-130 flies in, becomes the fuel source, and pumps into fighters or helicopters on a strip with no infrastructure at all. The tanker is the airfield.

A forward arming and refuelling point in practice: a Marine Corps F/A-18 taking fuel from an Air Force C-130 during Cope North 2022. The concept disperses aircraft across many smaller fields, which means fewer people and less equipment at each one, which in turn means every ground crew has to be able to do more than their primary job.

Hot-pitting fits that exactly. It is the capability that lets a bare-bones location regenerate combat aircraft, and it is why the Air Force has been certifying base after base and airframe after airframe. Scott Air Force Base in Illinois, an air mobility hub rather than a fighter base, added the F-35A to its hot-pit certification in January 2024, joining the UH-60, F-16, EA-18G, E-2D, CH-47 and F-22.

“It allows aircraft to rapidly get back into the fight. It is critical to the ACE construct as the 375th Air Mobility Wing prepares Airmen to be combat-effective in dispersed and contested environments.”
Tech. Sgt. Lauren Carosi — 375th Operations Support Squadron, January 2024

The cost nobody prints on the brochure

Every hot pit is a deliberate acceptance of risk. Fuel is being moved under pressure within metres of a running turbine, hot brakes and live electrical systems, by people who cannot hear each other speak. It works because the procedure is rehearsed to the point of boredom and because currency is enforced rather than assumed.

That is the real lesson of the hot pit. The time saving does not come from equipment or from clever engineering. It comes from a set of checks somebody decided could safely be skipped, and from a crew trained well enough that skipping them is defensible.

Sources: 114th Fighter Wing, “Hot Pit Refueling”, December 2017; Air Force Materiel Command, “Scott AFB successfully hot-pit refuels F-35 for the first time, gains certification”, January 2024; Airforce Technology on the 23d Logistics Readiness Squadron hot-pit trials; USAF Agile Combat Employment doctrine material.

Frequently Asked Questions

<details open>
What is hot pit refuelling?

Hot pit refuelling is refuelling an aircraft immediately after landing while its engines are still running.
