Bloomberg reported on 23 September that Chinese authorities have taken possession of the components and have not given them back. Of all the parts on a stealth fighter that could have gone astray, these are close to the worst two to lose.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Nobody has produced evidence that China engineered the diversion. On a stealth fighter it is part of the radar cross-section, and one of the harder parts to get right. A cockpit is a cavity full of metal, seat rails, ejection hardware and a human being, and radar loves cavities. The canopy has to keep all of that from lighting up a radar screen while remaining optically clean enough to fly and fight through.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>That is done with coatings and material treatments layered into the transparency itself. The War Zone, assessing the loss on 24 September, described canopies as particularly demanding on a stealth aircraft, with materials and treatments critical to the aircraft&rsquo;s overall low-observable performance. Those coatings are not published. It is a large, load-bearing, moving panel that has to seal flush into a stealth airframe and then open in flight without wrecking the aircraft&rsquo;s signature on the way. Its structure, its edge treatments, its interfaces with the surrounding skin and the tolerances it is built to are all decisions that propagate across the entire outer shell of the aeroplane.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Put plainly: you cannot copy an F-35 from a door. You can learn a great deal about how the Americans solve the problem of making a moving panel disappear, which is a problem every stealth programme in the world is working on. Marles is describing unserviceable parts going back for repair, which is routine and unglamorous. The American assessment is about what those particular objects physically are, regardless of their condition. Both can be accurate at once.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>What the incident really exposes is the supply chain. The F-35 is maintained across a global network of partner nations, and broken components travel between them on commercial freight like any other cargo. A crate leaves Australia, transits South Korea, and a routing decision somewhere in that chain puts it in Hong Kong. No espionage required, just a logistics system that was never designed on the assumption that one wrong waypoint hands a rival a piece of the airframe.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>That is the part the Pentagon says it now wants safeguards against.
