Everything that flies between the Russian mainland and the wider Baltic passes through a corridor that both Helsinki and Stockholm now watch continuously.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Quick Reaction Alert is the least glamorous duty in any air force and the one that never stops. Aircraft sit armed and fuelled, crews wait, and the scramble order comes from an operations centre watching radar tracks that will not identify themselves. Finnish and Swedish jets have flown together for years, but always in training or in parallel national missions. On 28 August 2026 the Finnish Defence Forces announced that Sweden would contribute JAS 39 Gripen fighters and a Visby-class corvette to the surveillance and protection of Finland&rsquo;s territorial integrity in the Baltic Sea region. The stated purpose was blunt: strengthen air surveillance, and free up Finnish resources to deal with violations and incidents elsewhere. Finnish and Swedish squadrons have flown Cross Border Training sorties on an almost weekly basis for several years &mdash; routine, unpublicised, and the reason two different fleets can share a frequency and a tactical picture without a fuss. That habit has since been folded into Nordic Air Power, the four-nation effort that also takes in Norway and Denmark, and it is coordinated in turn with NATO&rsquo;s Baltic Air Policing detachments.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Both countries arrived at the alliance late and fast. Finland joined NATO on 4 April 2023, Sweden on 7 March 2024, ending a combined century and a half of formal non-alignment. No airspace was violated, nothing was fired, and Russian aircraft flying in international airspace are doing something entirely lawful. The significance is procedural, and procedural changes are usually the ones that last.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Finland is also in the middle of the largest recapitalisation in its air force&rsquo;s history. Its first <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/f-35-lightning-ii\/\">F-35A<\/a> fighters touched down at Rovaniemi in September 2026, the beginning of the end for the Hornet fleet that flew this intercept. Sweden, meanwhile, continues to develop the Gripen.
