By the time two Romanian <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/f-16-fighting-falcon\/\">F-16s<\/a> were airborne from Borcea and a helicopter was lifting out of Bac&#259;u, the thing they had been sent to find was already down in a forest outside a town of three thousand people, and children across four villages were being told to stay home until ten o&rsquo;clock.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>On the morning of 24 September 2026, Romania&rsquo;s Ministry of National Defence detected an aerial target moving over Ukrainian territory close to the border, in the north of Boto&#537;ani county. It crossed into Romanian airspace, stayed there for roughly four minutes, and crashed near Solca in neighbouring Suceava county. Nobody was hurt. Nothing was damaged. And that, in the current Romanian autumn, counts as an ordinary Thursday.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>What makes this one worth reading is not the drone. At 04:41 an RO-Alert message went out to the northern part of Tulcea county, in the Danube Delta, after a group of aerial targets was picked up north of Chilia Veche on the Ukrainian side of the border. That alert was lifted at 05:44. Ninety-odd minutes later a second RO-Alert went to Boto&#537;ani and Suceava, at 06:26.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Two Romanian Air Force F-16s launched from the 86th Air Base at Borcea. Two Spanish <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/fa-18-hornet\/\">F-18 Hornets<\/a> launched from the 57th Air Base at Mihail Kog&#259;lniceanu, where Spain currently holds NATO enhanced Air Policing duty. At 07:21 an IAR-330 SOCAT helicopter lifted from the 95th Air Base at Bac&#259;u to work the area where the target had gone down.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ACXq1JjCIAE\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>That is a considerable amount of airpower for an object the Ministry of National Defence would later describe simply as &ldquo;a small-sized drone&rdquo;. It is also, increasingly, the routine. So the obvious question after Solca was why four fighters were airborne and the drone still hit the trees on its own.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;The conditions for shooting down a drone must be met simultaneously. A shootdown puts wreckage and an explosion somewhere, and somewhere has to be empty. There was no fire. Specialists recovered dozens of fragments of varying sizes from the trees, many of them carrying inscriptions, and sent the lot for expert examination. Residents filmed the drone as it passed low over their houses and, once it went down, several set off on scooters to find it. One witness told Romanian media it hit the trees and exploded, though the defence ministry recorded no fire at the site.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The Diplomatic Half of the Answer<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>Miru&#539;&#259; also said what Romanian ministers have been saying more often and more directly: that the response to this cannot only be military.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>He called for a formal protest against &ldquo;those who do not respect international law, such as the Russian Federation&rdquo;, while noting that the diplomatic channel belongs to the Foreign Ministry and the Presidential Administration rather than to Defence. The ministry did not attribute this particular drone to anyone.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>That is the uncomfortable arithmetic of a border war next door.
