The Boland Amendment barred the CIA and the Pentagon from spending money on military operations in Nicaragua. Yet weapons were still reaching the rebels by air.<\/p>\n<p>The C-123K that flew on 5 October was part of that pipeline. It belonged to Corporate Air Services, a front company for Southern Air Transport, and operated from Ilopango airport in El Salvador. On the ground, a young Sandinista soldier named Jos\u00e9 Fernando Canales Alem\u00e1n saw it coming.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The missile and the parachute<\/h2>\n<p>The SA-7, known to the Soviets as the 9K32 Strela-2, is a simple heat-seeking missile fired from the shoulder. Against a big, slow, piston-engined transport at low altitude, it was deadly.
