The jets you can most easily spare are the ones you are still using. Give away a squadron and you have a squadron-shaped hole until the replacements arrive, which in fighter procurement means years.<\/p>\r\n<p>Sweden's answer is to treat the transfer and the replacement as one transaction. On paper, Sweden ends up with a larger and considerably more capable fleet than it started with.<\/p>\r\n<p>On paper. Sweden does not currently operate 60 Gripen E. It operates a handful. The first Swedish aircraft was handed over in October 2025, and Wikman described \u201cmore than a handful\u201d flying under the procurement agency FMV ahead of formal service entry.<\/p>\r\n<p>So the country simultaneously stands up a new fighter type, hands its predecessor to a nation at war, trains Ukrainian pilots and ground crews on it, and adds twelve aircraft to an order it has not finished taking delivery of. That is a considerable amount of change for an air force of Sweden's size.<\/p>\r\n<p>Wikman's confidence rests partly on how quickly the Ukrainian side has moved before. Ukraine has a track record of introducing Western types \u2014 F-16, Mirage 2000 \u2014 far faster than the timelines Western air forces would consider normal.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background: #f8f9fa; border-left: 4px solid #1565c0; padding: 20px 22px; margin: 18px 0 24px; border-radius: 0 8px 8px 0; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.7; display: flex; gap: 20px; align-items: flex-start;\">\r\n<div><em>\u201cI am deeply proud that Sweden and Saab can now enable the provision of Gripen E to Ukraine, bringing a world-class fighter that will transform the Ukrainian Air Force\u2019s capability. This will significantly strengthen Ukraine\u2019s air defence and help ensure the nation can protect its people and safeguard its future\u201d<\/em>\r\n<div style=\"margin-top: 10px; font-size: 14px; color: #555;\"><strong>Micael Johansson<\/strong> \u2014 President and Chief Executive Officer, Saab<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top: 22px;\">Can Saab build them?<\/h2>\r\n<p>That is the real constraint. Johansson has said Saab is aiming for somewhere between 25 and 30 Gripen a year \u2014 close to double what the company produces now. Ukraine's 16 new-build Es are slated for 2029\u20132030. Sweden's additional twelve would queue behind or alongside them.<\/p>\r\n<p>Ukraine has spoken of an eventual ambition of up to 150 Swedish jets. At 25 to 30 aircraft a year, shared with Sweden and Saab's other customers, that is a decade-scale programme even if every contract were signed tomorrow.<\/p>\r\n<p>Which is why the sentence to watch is not the one about twelve aircraft.
