Surgeons took his right leg above the knee that day, and his left below the knee months later. His flying career, everyone agreed, was over.<\/p>\r\n<p>They were wrong. Within months he was walking without a stick; within a year he was driving and even flying again. The peacetime RAF still invalided him out &mdash; the rules had no place for a legless pilot. Bader had a view about rules.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;Rules are for the guidance of wise men and the obedience of fools.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Sir Douglas Bader<\/strong> &mdash; a maxim long associated with him<\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>When war broke out in 1939 and Britain suddenly needed every pilot it could find, he got his chance. Shot down over occupied France, Bader escaped his falling fighter only by abandoning a prosthetic leg trapped in the cockpit. Captured, he was such a persistent escaper that the Germans eventually threatened to take his legs away at night.<\/p>\r\n<p>There was a stranger courtesy, too.
