He drifted through the oilfields as a &ldquo;roughneck,&rdquo; did a stretch in a reformatory for armed robbery, and might have vanished into obscurity entirely &mdash; except that in October 1926 a splinter of metal destroyed his left eye. He took the insurance settlement and bought an aeroplane.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>He learned the trade barnstorming and parachuting, then became personal pilot to a wealthy Oklahoma oilman, F.C. Hall, who owned a sleek Lockheed Vega he had named the <em>Winnie Mae<\/em> after his daughter. The <em>Winnie Mae<\/em>&rsquo;s wooden cabin could not be pressurised, so in 1934 he worked with Russell Colley of B.F. Goodrich to build the world&rsquo;s first practical pressure suit &mdash; rubber, canvas and an aluminium diver&rsquo;s helmet, the direct ancestor of every spacesuit that followed.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\" style=\"margin:0 0 24px;width:100%\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" width=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/afterburner\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/07\/wiley-post-first-pressure-suit.jpg\" alt=\"Wiley Post in the first pressure suit\" style=\"width:100%;height:auto;max-width:100%;display:block;border-radius:6px\"><figcaption style=\"font-size:13px;color:#777;text-align:center;margin-top:6px;font-style:italic\">Wiley Post in the pressure suit he helped design &mdash; the ancestor of the modern spacesuit. Photo: Wikimedia Commons.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<p>Sealed inside it, Post climbed above 40,000 feet over Chicago and eventually reached the neighbourhood of 50,000 feet. Up there he noticed his ground speed leaping far beyond what the engine alone could explain. He had flown into the jet stream &mdash; the high-altitude wind rivers that airliners ride to this day &mdash; and become the first person to use them.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The last flight<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>In 1935 Post built a hybrid floatplane from the fuselage of a Lockheed Orion and the wings of a wrecked Lockheed Explorer, planning to survey a route to Russia. His close friend Will Rogers &mdash; humorist, film star and the most beloved man in America &mdash; asked to come along to gather material for his newspaper column, writing at his typewriter as Post flew.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>On 15 August 1935, near Point Barrow, Alaska, they landed in a lagoon to ask directions in bad weather. On take-off the engine failed at low altitude. The nose-heavy aircraft rolled and plunged into the shallow water, and both men died instantly.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #d32f2f;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;I never met a man I didn&rsquo;t like.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Will Rogers<\/strong> &mdash; humorist, who died beside Post<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>A nation grieved twice over &mdash; for its favourite wit and for the one-eyed aviator who had kept dragging the future into view.
