It finally sank onto the pavement in front of a suburban house. Firemen and police rushed the gondola, expecting to pull injured airmen from the wreck.

The control car was empty. Its door hung open. The radio still worked, the engines had been running, the parachutes and life raft were untouched. Two experienced Navy pilots had been aboard that morning. Japanese submarines had shelled the coast, sunk ships, and put the whole West Coast on edge. The Navy’s answer for spotting subs was the blimp: slow, patient, able to loiter for hours at low altitude in weather that grounded fixed-wing aircraft. It took over Goodyear’s little advertising airships, designated them the L-class, and set them patrolling the coast.

“Blimps had the perfect operational capabilities for coastal patrols. Aboard were Lieutenant Ernest Cody, 27, and Ensign Charles Adams, a veteran airshipman in his thirties who had survived the loss of the flying aircraft carrier USS Macon years before. A third man, machinist’s mate James Riley Hill, had been ordered off just before departure — Cody was worried about the extra weight. It saved his life.

Just before eight, the crew radioed that they had spotted an oil slick a few miles off the Farallon Islands and were going to investigate — a possible submarine. A Liberty ship and a fishing boat watched the blimp descend to within about thirty feet of the water and circle the slick. That was the last anyone saw of Cody and Adams. The radio went quiet.

The cramped control car of a wartime Navy blimp, similar to L-8’s — the compartment found empty with its door swung open. Around 11 a.m. it reappeared over Ocean Beach. Two surf fishermen grabbed its trailing ropes, peered into the gondola, and found no one there. It tore free, clipped a cliff, shed a depth charge onto a golf course, and drifted on to crash in Daly City.

Everything about the scene deepened the mystery. The crash was gentle enough that the men would have walked away unhurt. Their parachutes and the life raft were still aboard. The radio was in working order and no distress call had been sent. Only two things were missing: Cody, Adams — and their life jackets, which they had been wearing.

“It is certainly possible that both officers accidentally fell into the ocean. But the board admitted the whole thing was only “a matter of conjecture.” Everything else was left to the public imagination: capture by a Japanese submarine, defection, a murderous stowaway, a lovers’ quarrel, even alien abduction.

None of it can be proved, and none of it disproved. The L-8’s gondola survived, went back to work for Goodyear after the war, and today sits in the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola — a quiet aluminium box that once carried two men out over the Pacific and brought back only the mystery of where they went.

More on the enduring puzzle of the L-8.

Sources: L-8 (Wikipedia); Greg Daugherty, “The 80-Year Mystery of the U.S. Navy’s Ghost Blimp,” Smithsonian Magazine; U.S. Naval Institute Proceedings (1970); San Francisco Chronicle; National Naval Aviation Museum.

<use href="#mfsh-i-share"/>Share this story

The Pilot Who Wrote The Little Prince and Vanished

The Bomber the Desert Kept for 15 Years

Share this story Shortly after 11 a.m. on 16 August 1942, a sagging, half-deflated US Navy blimp came drifting low over the rooftops of Daly City, California, snagging telephone wires as a crowd chased it through the streets.
