The <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/afterburner\/es\/aeronave\/tu-95-bear\/\">Tupolev Tu-95<\/a>, known to NATO as the &ldquo;Bear,&rdquo; is one of them. It is a large, four-engine turboprop strategic bomber, and yet it cruises at speeds normally reserved for jets. That contradiction, a propeller aircraft on the doorstep of jet performance, is the whole of its story. The obvious powerplants each failed one half of the requirement. Piston engines, as the earlier Tu-4 had shown, could not deliver the necessary power for so large an airframe. The turbojets available at the start of the 1950s produced the thrust but drank fuel at a rate that ruined the range.<\/p>\n<p>The turboprop offered a middle path. It gave more power than a piston engine and better fuel economy over long distances than the early turbojets, at a top speed sitting neatly between the two. A turboprop configuration was formally approved in 1951, and the Tu-95 first flew on 12 November 1952 with test pilot Alexey Perelet at the controls. An early prototype was lost to a propeller gearbox failure; the design then adopted the Kuznetsov NK-12, which proved far more reliable, and series production began in 1956.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The most powerful turboprop ever built<\/h2>\n<p>The engine is the heart of the matter. The NK-12 remains, to this day, the most powerful turboprop engine to have entered service, rated at roughly 11,000 kW (about 15,000 shp). The Bear carries four of them.<\/p>\n<p>Each NK-12 drives not one propeller but two, mounted on the same axis and turning in opposite directions: the contra-rotating arrangement. With four engines that gives eight propellers in total, and with four blades on each, thirty-two blades biting the air at once. To push a propeller aircraft toward 900 km\/h, the outer sections of the blades must move very fast indeed, and the tips exceed the speed of sound. Supersonic tips throw off continuous shockwaves, and eight propellers doing so together make the Tu-95 one of the loudest aircraft ever flown. The noise is not a side effect to be engineered away; it is the direct acoustic signature of the physics that make the aircraft quick.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;In terms of noise, it was even noisy enough in our P-3 that I routinely wore earplugs under our headset. Maximum speed is quoted at about 920 km\/h (around 575 mph), which places the Tu-95 among the fastest propeller-driven aircraft ever built; its own civil derivative, the Tu-114 airliner, holds the official world speed record for propeller aircraft, a distinction that stays within the same family. Range is roughly 15,000 km (9,300 mi) and the service ceiling about 13,700 m (45,000 ft).<\/p>\n<p>The airframe is large and, for a propeller aircraft, unusually clean. The fuselage stretches 46.2 m (151 ft 7 in), the wing spans 50.1 m (164 ft 4 in), and that wing is swept back 35 degrees. Sweep of this kind belongs to the jet age; seeing it married to turboprops is what makes the Bear look, at first glance, like a category error. The sweep was chosen partly so that the main wing spar passed through the fuselage ahead of the bomb bay, an elegant piece of structural reasoning rather than styling.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">One airframe, many descendants<\/h2>\n<p>A good airframe tends to spawn a family, and the Tu-95 did so generously. The Tu-114 turned it into an airliner. The Tu-142 adapted it for maritime patrol. The Tu-116 served as a stop-gap passenger conversion, and the Tu-126 grew out of the Tu-114 as an airborne early-warning platform. That the same basic design could stretch across bombing, patrol and civil transport speaks to how sound the original engineering was.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">A design that refused to age<\/h2>\n<p>Longevity is the Bear&rsquo;s final surprise. Like the American B-52, it has outlasted a succession of aircraft meant to replace it, and for much the same reason: an airframe roomy and adaptable enough to accept new engines, sensors and equipment as the decades passed. The engines themselves have been progressively refined, the newest fitting upgraded NK-12 versions and new propellers that roughly halve the vibration. An aircraft that first flew in 1952 is expected to remain in service for many years yet.<\/p>\n<p>Strip away the mythology and the essential achievement stands clear. The Tu-95 answered a difficult brief by refusing the usual compromise between speed and range, and it did so through one uncommonly good engine turned into eight propellers. The noise, the swept wing, the near-century of service: all of it traces back to that single, stubborn engineering decision.
