It is a wonderful story. The Ju 390 was among the more realistic: a stretched, six-engined development of the Ju 290 maritime patrol aircraft, with enormous range. In its usual form, a Ju 390 prototype flew from Mont-de-Marsan in south-west France, reached the American coast near New York, and returned safely \u2014 proof, supposedly, that Germany could have bombed Manhattan.<\/p>\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;The Ju 390 prototype, operating from Mont-de-Marsan on a test flight in January 1944, got to within 20 km of New York and returned safely.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>German Aircraft of the Second World War<\/strong> &mdash; J.R. Historians Karl K\u00f6ssler and G\u00fcnter Ott traced the movements of both prototypes in detail. According to the logbook of test pilot Hans Pancherz, the Ju 390 V1 was flown to Prague on 26 November 1943 and continued test flying there until late March 1944 \u2014 nowhere near France when the New York flight was supposed to have taken place. The second prototype, the V2, was not even completed until June 1944, with flight testing beginning that September. Neither aircraft could have been over Long Island in January.<\/p>\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #d32f2f;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;If there was only one such aircraft in existence, it was nowhere near France at the time when the flight was supposed to have taken place, and therefore could not be in two places at once.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Karl K\u00f6ssler & G\u00fcnter Ott<\/strong> &mdash; aviation historians<\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>The trail of the story itself is just as telling. The aviation historian Dr. Kenneth P. Werrell found that it originated in two British intelligence reports from August 1944, based partly on the interrogation of prisoners. The photographs those reports claimed had been taken of the Long Island coast have never been found \u2014 and, in all likelihood, never existed.<\/p>\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Vp8nkHFzqlE\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0;border-radius:8px\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Why the story survives<\/h2><p>Myths endure because they capture a fear that felt real. In 1944, Americans genuinely worried about a Luftwaffe strike on the East Coast, and a six-engined giant with transatlantic range made that fear tangible. The Ju 390 was exactly the kind of aircraft that <em>could<\/em> have tried it \u2014 which is precisely why the legend attached itself to this machine and not another.<\/p><p>The truth is quieter but no less interesting: Germany built a capable, long-legged aircraft, flew it a handful of times, and cancelled it before it could matter. The Ju 390 never buzzed New York. It barely flew at all.
