El teniente coronel Frank \u201cPete\u201d Everest lo llev\u00f3 a Mach 2,87, rozando el objetivo. Luego, el 7 de septiembre de 1956, el capit\u00e1n Iven Kincheloe lo elev\u00f3 a 126\u00a0200 pies, convirti\u00e9ndose en el primer ser humano en volar por encima de los 100\u00a0000 pies, y lo suficientemente alto como para poder ver la curvatura de la Tierra y la inmensidad del espacio. Haggerty Jr.<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>Apt realiz\u00f3 un vuelo casi perfecto en su primer intento, algo que incluso Everest hab\u00eda tenido dificultades para lograr en ocho vuelos. El motor funcion\u00f3 un poco m\u00e1s de lo previsto y el X-2 super\u00f3 Mach 3.19, alcanzando m\u00e1s de 3200 kil\u00f3metros por hora. Lo hab\u00eda conseguido. Entonces, a\u00fan por encima de Mach 3 y quiz\u00e1s preocupado por no tener suficiente energ\u00eda para planear de regreso, vir\u00f3 bruscamente hacia el lecho del lago.<\/p><p>Fue lo \u00fanico que la aeronave no pudo soportar. El X-2 entr\u00f3 en una violenta serie de giros divergentes: acoplamiento inercial, donde el movimiento en un eje influye incontrolablemente en los dem\u00e1s, el mismo demonio que casi hab\u00eda matado a Chuck Yeager en el X-1A tres a\u00f1os antes. La \u00faltima transmisi\u00f3n de Apt son\u00f3 como un sobresaltado \u201c\u00a1Ah\u00ed va!\u201d. Dispar\u00f3 la c\u00e1psula de escape, pero qued\u00f3 inconsciente y muri\u00f3 al estrellarse contra el suelo. Pero el X-2 hab\u00eda demostrado que el vuelo sostenido a velocidades superiores a Mach 3 era posible, y hab\u00eda evidenciado, a un costo terrible, lo peligroso que pod\u00eda ser volar a gran altitud y a altas velocidades. El X-2 se llev\u00f3 a dos de los mejores pilotos de pruebas de la \u00e9poca.
