La \u00fanica v\u00eda para entregar combustible, armas y municiones a los ej\u00e9rcitos de Chiang Kai-shek \u2014y a los aviadores estadounidenses que luchaban en China\u2014 era cruzar las monta\u00f1as. Por ello, el Comando de Transporte A\u00e9reo de las Fuerzas A\u00e9reas del Ej\u00e9rcito de EE. UU. construy\u00f3 un puente a\u00e9reo a trav\u00e9s del Himalaya y nunca permiti\u00f3 que se cerrara.<\/p>\r\n<p>La ruta serpenteaba entre picos de entre 4500 y 6000 metros de altura, atravesando tormentas monz\u00f3nicas, hielo severo y vientos que pod\u00edan superar los 160 kil\u00f3metros por hora. Las tripulaciones volaban aviones sobrecargados con cartas n\u00e1uticas deficientes, casi sin ayudas a la navegaci\u00f3n y con escasa informaci\u00f3n meteorol\u00f3gica. Muchos pilotos llegaron a la India sin entrenamiento alguno en el enorme Curtiss C-46 Commando que estaban a punto de sobrevolar las monta\u00f1as m\u00e1s altas del planeta.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/c8_nzsgfLo0\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0;border-radius:8px\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n<p>El mal tiempo, y no el enemigo, fue el gran asesino. El comandante del Comando de Transporte A\u00e9reo, el general de brigada William H. En agosto de 1943, el corresponsal de guerra de la CBS, Eric Sevareid, tuvo que saltar en paraca\u00eddas de un C-46 averiado sobre las colinas Naga de Birmania y fue rescatado tras varios d\u00edas en tierra. Esta lecci\u00f3n se aplic\u00f3 directamente al puente a\u00e9reo de Berl\u00edn tres a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s, dirigido por el mismo Tunner.
