Where the Americans went for a smaller, lower-flying penetrator, Tupolev went big: a variable-sweep wing that spreads to nearly 56 metres for efficient cruise and folds back for a high-speed dash, wrapped around a fuselage the size of an airliner.<\/p><p>Four Kuznetsov NK-32 afterburning turbofans &mdash; among the most powerful engines ever bolted to a combat aircraft &mdash; push it past Mach 2. It first flew on 18 December 1981 and entered service in 1987. Its job is to loiter at range and launch: two internal rotary launchers hold long-range Kh-55 and Kh-101\/102 cruise missiles, nuclear or conventional, letting it strike from thousands of kilometres away without entering hostile airspace. Maximum payload runs to roughly 40 tonnes, and unrefuelled range to about 12,300 km.<\/p><p>That makes it a strategic standoff platform, closer in spirit to a flying missile magazine than to a stealthy penetrator. Most were eventually scrapped under a U.S.-funded program; a handful were handed to Russia around 2000, partly to settle a natural-gas debt.
