It has a twin tail-boom layout and three turboprop engines, two pulling from the wings and a third pushing from the tail. Publicly reported figures give it a payload of more than a tonne and an endurance of up to roughly 40 hours, letting it loiter over the sea for a day and a half at a stretch.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>First shown at the Zhuhai Air Show in 2022, the TB-001 is a reconnaissance-strike machine: it carries a large electro-optical sensor turret and can be armed with anti-ship and surface-to-surface missiles. Its companion, a Y-9 in a signals-intelligence and electronic-warfare fit, is a familiar visitor: Japan has intercepted the type repeatedly in recent months, alongside Russian Il-20 spy planes and joint China-Russia patrols. Japan has not confirmed that the TB-001 and the Y-9 were operating as a manned-unmanned team, but their overlapping flight paths were notable, and hint at where Chinese airpower is heading.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>For the crews of the JASDF, the message is simpler and more grinding.
