En 1934, le minist\u00e8re de l&#039;Air demanda au physicien \u00e9cossais Robert Watson-Watt si les ondes radio pouvaient \u00eatre utilis\u00e9es comme arme pour d\u00e9truire des avions. Elles pouvaient d\u00e9tecter des formations se rassemblant \u00e0 plus de 160 kilom\u00e8tres de distance. Le syst\u00e8me pr\u00e9sentait des angles morts, notamment face aux avions volant \u00e0 basse altitude\u00a0; un r\u00e9seau compl\u00e9mentaire, appel\u00e9 Chain Home Low, fut donc ajout\u00e9 pour surveiller les zones situ\u00e9es en dessous du faisceau principal. Rudimentaire par rapport aux normes ult\u00e9rieures, il \u00e9tait n\u00e9anmoins suffisant et op\u00e9rationnel juste \u00e0 temps.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Mais les donn\u00e9es radar brutes ne sont que de simples points lumineux sur un \u00e9cran. Les images radar et les rapports du corps d&#039;observateurs au sol affluaient vers une salle de filtrage \u00e0 Bentley Priory, o\u00f9 ils \u00e9taient combin\u00e9s en une image unique et fiable, puis transmis aux stations de groupe et de secteur. L\u00e0, les contr\u00f4leurs guidaient les escadrons de chasse directement vers les raids ennemis. L&#039;ensemble du processus, depuis l&#039;apparition d&#039;un signal sur un \u00e9cran jusqu&#039;\u00e0 l&#039;ascension des Spitfires pour intercepter l&#039;ennemi, pouvait se d\u00e9rouler en \u00e0 peine quatre minutes.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Les avantages furent consid\u00e9rables. Au lieu d&#039;\u00e9puiser ses pilotes et ses moteurs en effectuant des patrouilles stationnaires inutiles, la RAF pouvait maintenir ses chasseurs au sol jusqu&#039;\u00e0 ce qu&#039;ils soient n\u00e9cessaires, puis les d\u00e9ployer pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment l\u00e0 o\u00f9 il le fallait. C&#039;est cette int\u00e9gration, et non un simple gadget, qui a permis \u00e0 une nation en difficult\u00e9 de\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/afterburner\/fr\/aeronef\/supermarine-spitfire\/\">Supermarine Spitfire<\/a> Cette force a tenu t\u00eate \u00e0 un ennemi num\u00e9riquement sup\u00e9rieur durant tout l&#039;\u00e9t\u00e9 1940.
