Lorsque des vents violents soufflent sur une cha\u00eene de montagnes, ils peuvent engendrer d&#039;immenses ondes stationnaires d&#039;air qui s&#039;\u00e9l\u00e8vent sur des kilom\u00e8tres. En quelques endroits sur Terre, et \u00e0 certaines p\u00e9riodes de l&#039;ann\u00e9e, le vortex polaire amplifie ces ondes jusqu&#039;\u00e0 ce qu&#039;elles atteignent les profondeurs de la stratosph\u00e8re. Au-dessus des Andes, pr\u00e8s d&#039;El Calafate, un planeur peut se laisser porter par ces ondes jusqu&#039;aux confins de l&#039;espace. En 2006, avec l&#039;aventurier Steve Fossett, il a pilot\u00e9 le Perlan 1 non pressuris\u00e9 jusqu&#039;\u00e0 15\u00a0460 m\u00e8tres (50\u00a0727 pieds). Douze ans plus tard, le 2 septembre 2018, les pilotes Jim Payne et Tim Gardner ont emmen\u00e9 le nouveau Perlan 2 \u00e0 23\u00a0200 m\u00e8tres (76\u00a0124 pieds), pulv\u00e9risant ce record et d\u00e9passant le plafond de vol soutenu du Lockheed U-2. Soutenue par Airbus, l&#039;\u00e9quipe Perlan utilise ces vols pour \u00e9tudier les ondes stratosph\u00e9riques, la couche d&#039;ozone et les m\u00e9canismes du climat. L&#039;air \u00e9tant aussi rar\u00e9fi\u00e9 \u00e0 23\u00a0000 m\u00e8tres d&#039;altitude que l&#039;atmosph\u00e8re martienne, le planeur constitue un v\u00e9ritable laboratoire volant pour observer le comportement des ailes dans le quasi-vide, des connaissances qui pourraient un jour permettre aux a\u00e9ronefs de voler sur d&#039;autres plan\u00e8tes.
