Estimates put another hundred thousand or more around San Francisco Bay. CBS and NBC were broadcasting live, and the feed was relayed onto seven foreign networks. The Postmaster General was there. No passengers<\/p><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The order to cast off<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>The ceremony was written to sound nautical, because Pan Am wanted the public thinking about clipper ships rather than about the fact that the Pacific had swallowed a good many aeroplanes already. Postmaster General James A. Farley read out a message from President Roosevelt. Then Pan Am's president gave the order.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;Captain Musick, you have your sailing orders. It was theatre, and it worked.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Roosevelt's message congratulated the crew as an air-minded sailor and noted that the flight also marked the centenary of the first clipper ship reaching San Francisco. The plan had been to fly over it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #d32f2f;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;It had been our intention to fly over the bridge, but Musick quickly saw that with the engine cowl flaps open he would not be able to get up enough speed to clear the wires, so he nosed the Clipper down at the last moment and went under the bridge cables, threading his way through dangling construction wires. We all ducked and held our breath until we were in the clear.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Victor A. Wright<\/strong> &mdash; second engineering officer aboard the inaugural flight, recounted in Aviation History, March 2000<\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The newsreel cameras caught the aircraft leaving. What they did not catch was that the most famous departure in commercial aviation history nearly ended in the water in front of a hundred thousand people.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HtBRRFfDhT8\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0;border-radius:8px\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Seven men, and one name you know<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>There were no passengers. The aircraft carried mail and a crew of seven: Captain Edwin C. Musick, Pan Am's chief pilot; First Officer R. O. D. Sullivan; Second Officer George King; First Engineer Officer C. D. Wright; Second Engineer Officer Victor A. Wright, no relation; Radio Officer William T. Jarboe Jr.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>And, as navigation officer, Fred Noonan.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Noonan is remembered now for how his career ended, somewhere over the central Pacific in July 1937 with Amelia Earhart. The Philippines went, by contemporary accounts, slightly mad.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8lYz2Q8-kMw\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0;border-radius:8px\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The engineering was less romantic than the branding. The Pacific could not be crossed in one go, so Pan Am built a chain of bases on specks of coral, shipping in fuel, accommodation and radio equipment to islands with no population and no fresh water. The aeroplane was the visible part; the logistics were the achievement.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Only three M-130s were ever built, and the type had a hard end. The Hawaii Clipper vanished with everyone aboard in 1938. The Philippine Clipper flew into a mountain in California in 1943. The China Clipper itself was lost in an accident at Port of Spain, Trinidad, in January 1945.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"display:flex;justify-content:center;margin:2em 0\"><blockquote class=\"reddit-embed-bq\" data-embed-height=\"500\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/AviationHistory\/comments\/jyw26p\/the_one_and_only_china_clipper_at_alameda_in_1936\/\">The China Clipper at Alameda in 1936<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/embed.reddit.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>What survived was the idea. Before November 1935 the Pacific was something you crossed by ship over weeks.
