They looked a bit like the Chengdu J-20. They also looked a bit wrong. Analysts squinted at satellite imagery and floated theories: full-scale mock-ups, radar-signature test articles, decoys to soak up a first strike.

The answer, it turns out, is considerably less glamorous and quite a lot more sensible. At least one of them is a training aid for airfield firefighters.

Ground-level photographs of the object have now surfaced on social media, and they show it doing exactly what fire trainers do: sitting in a pool of burning fuel while two crash tenders hose it down.

Informations clés

Qu'est-ce que c'est

A full-scale aircraft fire training aid loosely shaped like a stealth fighter

First spotted

2022, as satellite-visible shapes at Lintao Air Base

Second sighting

2025, a similar but distinct object at Jining Qufu Airport

Now confirmed

Ground-level photos show the object used in live firefighting drills

Shared features

Modified diamond-delta planform, canards, twin vertical tails

Odd detail

The cockpit is closer to the newer J-35 than to the J-20

Still unexplained

The 2022 Lintao shapes differ in wing shape and nose length

J-20 fleet

Roughly 500 aircraft in service, according to one published estimate

Three objects, and only one of them is explained

The trail starts in 2022, when a satellite image showed several fighter-like shapes at Lintao Air Base, a remote facility in western China. They had the rough proportions of a stealth fighter without matching any known type precisely.

Three years later, a second object turned up at Jining Qufu Airport. Broadly similar, distinctly different in detail. The new firefighting trainer aligns much more closely with that 2025 object than with the Lintao shapes: same modified diamond-delta planform, same canards, same twin vertical tails.

Left to right: one of the shapes at Lintao Air Base in 2022, the object at Jining Qufu Airport in 2025, and the J-20-like aircraft fire trainer. Images: Google Earth and Chinese internet

Which leaves the Lintao articles still unaccounted for. Their wings are shaped differently and their noses are longer and more slender. They could be fire trainers too. They could equally be full-scale mock-ups or decoys, which is the theory that got everyone excited in the first place.

The photographs were flagged by Andreas Rupprecht, a long-standing authority on Chinese military aviation. Where and when they were taken is not clear. The markings painted on the tarmac do not match either Lintao or Jining Qufu, so this is likely a third location entirely.

Why fire trainers look almost right and never exactly right

Here is the detail that explains the whole four-year mystery. A fire trainer is not a replica. It is a reusable object that burns convincingly and survives being extinguished several hundred times.

“In general, aircraft fire trainers can be anything that loosely represents a desired class of aircraft, and can range from specially built systems to repurposed old aircraft hulks.”
Joseph Trevithick — Deputy Editor, TWZ, 25 August 2026

That is why the shape is approximate. Firefighters need to practise reaching a cockpit, cutting into a fuselage, and working around a delta wing and canards. They do not need an accurate radar cross-section. The builder gets the silhouette close enough and stops.

It also explains the strangest detail in the ground-level photos: the cockpit configuration looks more like the newer J-35 than the J-20 the rest of the airframe imitates. For a training aid, mixing features from two aircraft is not an error. It is just economical.

A subscale fire trainer in the general shape of an F-35 at Hill Air Force Base, Utah. Western air forces use the same approximate-shape approach. Photo: U.S. Air Force

Every serious air arm does this. The US Air Force has trainers roughly shaped like the F-35 and the F/A-18, and civilian airports run the same drills with generic airliner hulks. China building one that looks vaguely like its front-line stealth fighter is the least surprising thing in this story.

The boring explanation is the significant one

There is a reason a firefighting mock-up is worth writing about, and it is not the mock-up. It is what the mock-up implies about scale.

Chinese airfield firefighters working the J-20-like training aid up close. Photo: Chinese internet

The PLAAF is estimated to field roughly 500 J-20s, spread across at least 14 operational units and three training bases, with projections that the fleet could approach 1,000 airframes by 2030 if production holds. Those figures come from published analysis rather than official Chinese disclosure, so treat them as informed estimates.

Fleets that size generate an enormous volume of routine sorties, and routine sorties produce accidents purely as a matter of statistics. Somebody has to be trained and equipped to reach a burning stealth fighter and get the pilot out of it.

The real thing: a Chengdu J-20 of the PLAAF. The growing fleet is what drives demand for ground-support infrastructure like fire trainers. Photo: PLAAF

So the anticlimax is the point. For four years these shapes were read as evidence of something secret, because that is how ambiguous objects at remote Chinese airfields usually get read. They turned out to be evidence of something ordinary: an air force building the unglamorous infrastructure that a very large modern fleet requires.

Which, if you are trying to work out how seriously to take China’s stealth fighter programme, may be the more useful data point of the two.

Sources: TWZ (Joseph Trevithick, 25 August 2026), Andreas Rupprecht via X, U.S. Air Force, Google Earth imagery.

Articles similaires

China Flies Its Heavy Fighters to Africa

J-16 vs Rafale: China and Egypt Fly Their First Combat Drill

Fighter-like shapes spotted at Chinese airbases since 2022 have finally been explained: new ground-level photos show a J-20-shaped mock-up used for airfield firefighting training.

[664,670

post-17089233","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-military-aviation","category-news

J-20 Mystery Shapes Solved: China Fire Trainer | MiGFlug

<meta name="description" content="Fighter shapes at Chinese airbases are explained: new photos show a J-20 fire trainer used for airfield firefighting drills.
