Then, at a news conference in Kyrgyzstan in the early hours of Wednesday, Putin was asked about the case directly and, per the same reporting, demanded to know where the proof was and called Germany's sanctions a serious mistake.<\/p>\r\n<p>That is a notable escalation in level. Sabotage allegations are normally handled by ministries and embassies; a head of state answering them personally, within roughly thirty hours, suggests Moscow regards the consulate closure and the sanctions push as something more than routine.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-M24Tz2-WV8\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0;border-radius:8px\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Why an airport, and why this aircraft<\/h2>\r\n<p>Leipzig\/Halle is not an obvious target unless you know what moves through it. It is one of Europe's principal hubs for outsize air cargo, and Antonov freighters are a routine sight on its apron. The aircraft struck was a Ukrainian An-124, part of the fleet that carries the heavy and awkward loads no ordinary freighter can take.<\/p>\r\n<p>An explosive charge on the wing of a parked heavy freighter is not an attack on an airport in the conventional sense. It is an attempt to remove a specific, scarce and effectively irreplaceable piece of logistics capacity. Only a handful of flyable An-124s remain anywhere in the world, and the type is out of production. Destroying one does lasting damage that destroying a fighter does not.<\/p>\r\n<p>Whatever the diplomatic argument settles on, that is the part European air-cargo operators will be thinking about.
