A Mi-8 descends towards a public highway on Sakhalin Island, main rotor blades sweeping low over a truck that is still driving along the road. Then the helicopter goes off the road and into a ditch, and ends up on its side in the long grass.

According to the pro-Russian military Telegram channel Fighterbomber, both engines had stopped. According to Fighterbomber, the crew deliberately steered the helicopter off the highway during the descent to avoid hitting vehicles on the road. Photographs afterwards show a road sign bent and pinned under the fuselage.

An Mi-8 that loses both engines is not out of options. Autorotation works: a freewheeling unit lets the rotor keep spinning as air flows up through the disc, and in the last seconds the pilot converts that stored rotor energy into a cushion of lift. But it needs height, speed and somewhere to put the aircraft down, and a low approach into an airfield leaves very little of the first two.

A Russian Mi-8AMTSh of the type involved. Fuel exhaustion in a military helicopter can come from a mis-planned sortie, a bad fuel-quantity indication, a leak, a transfer failure, a diversion that ate the reserve, or somebody simply not putting enough in. Aviation accident files are full of all of them.

What makes this one worth more than a shrug is context.

The kerosene problem

Russia is under documented pressure on aviation fuel. Ukrainian strikes on refineries have cut domestic kerosene output, and on 29 August Ukraine’s Defence Intelligence directorate said Russia had imported at least 70,000 tonnes of Jet A-1 from South Korea and Egypt since the strikes began biting — delivered to St Petersburg and Vladivostok by three tankers, the Hanna, the Capibara and the Astoria, all under international sanctions. The Astoria alone reportedly carried nearly 11,000 tonnes from Ulsan to Vladivostok in early August.

Russia has also imposed a temporary ban on exporting its own aviation fuel through the end of November.

None of that proves anything about one helicopter on Sakhalin. The island sits roughly 6,000 kilometres east of the refineries being hit. But Vladivostok, one of the two ports taking in imported Jet A-1, is in the same corner of Russia — and a fleet operating under fuel pressure is a fleet where planning margins get thinner.

What a helicopter crew actually does when the engine quits: autorotation, explained and demonstrated.

A pattern, or a coincidence?

Russian Mi-8s have had a rough 2026. On 22 August an EMERCOM Mi-8MTV-1, RF-32830, suffered a double engine failure on an aerial patrol and made an emergency landing at Kalezh in Krasnodar Krai, according to the Aviation Safety Network and the tracking site RotorAlert. That aircraft was badly damaged in the autorotation — torn belly, broken landing gear, a leaking fuel tank. In May, Fighterbomber reported the loss of another military Mi-8 in terms that indicated crew fatalities.

Three incidents do not make a trend, and the Mi-8 flies in enormous numbers in punishing conditions. But when a military helicopter runs dry five kilometres from its own airfield, somebody upstream of the cockpit has usually made a decision that deserves examining.

Frequently Asked Questions

<details open>
What happened to the Russian Mi-8 on Sakhalin?

On 2 September 2026 a Russian Aerospace Forces Mi-8 came down on a highway on Sakhalin Island and ended up on its side in a roadside ditch.
