It did this five more times, in six different airframes. Painted on the side of each one, under a naval crest, were the words <em>Marinha de Guerra Angolana<\/em>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is a strange sentence, and almost every word in it is doing work. Switzerland is landlocked. Angola has a navy of roughly a thousand people. The company that built the helicopters is Swiss but majority-owned by an Emirati state conglomerate. The ships the helicopters will fly from are being welded together in Normandy and Abu Dhabi. And nobody involved is American, Russian, or Chinese.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On 11 September 2026, EDGE Group announced that all six ANAVIA HT-100 NAVAL unmanned helicopters had passed Factory Acceptance Trials and been handed over to the Angolan Navy. No armament announced<\/p><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"padding-top:22px\">What Was Actually Delivered<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trials ran from 24 to 28 August at ANAVIA&rsquo;s facility in Bilten, and they were not a demonstration for cameras at an arms fair. They were contractual Factory Acceptance Trials, attended by a senior Angolan Navy delegation and by Simportex, the Angolan state enterprise that handles defence procurement. All six aircraft flew. All six passed. All six were then formally handed over.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no exhibition in this story, which is itself mildly unusual for EDGE, a company that likes to make announcements at IDEX and NAVDEX. This one happened in a Swiss village on a working week.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The six aircraft are destined for three corvettes, two apiece. They will be tied into each ship&rsquo;s combat management system rather than operated as a standalone toy, which is the difference between a drone a navy owns and a drone a navy can actually use. Their announced payload is electro-optical and infrared sensors. Image: CMN via Naval News<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"padding-top:22px\">The Rotor System Is the Interesting Part<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Look at the photograph of the aircraft and something will nag at you before you can name it. There is no tail rotor. There is a tail, with a fin and an Angolan flag on it, but no propeller hanging off the side of it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is because the HT-100 uses a Flettner intermeshing rotor system, sometimes called a synchropter. Two rotor masts sit side by side, angled outward, spinning in opposite directions, their blades passing between each other in carefully timed gaps. Because the two rotors turn against each other, their torque cancels out, and the aircraft has no tendency to spin. So it does not need a tail rotor to stop it spinning.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not a new idea. Anton Flettner built the Fl 282 Kolibri on the same principle in Germany during the Second World War, and Kaman has been flying intermeshing rotors ever since, most famously in the K-MAX logging and cargo helicopter. What is new is putting one on a 120-kilogram robot and selling it to a navy.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The payoff is real. A conventional helicopter spends a meaningful slice of its engine power driving a tail rotor that produces no lift whatsoever. Delete the tail rotor and that power goes into the main discs instead. ANAVIA and EDGE both claim roughly 30 percent better energy efficiency for heavy payloads or long missions, which is a manufacturer&rsquo;s number and should be read as one, but the underlying physics is not in dispute.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a second benefit that matters more at sea than anywhere else. A tail rotor is a spinning blade at head height, several metres behind the fuselage, on a deck that is pitching and rolling and covered in people. Deleting it makes the aircraft dramatically safer to handle in a confined space. ANAVIA also says the tail boom contains no mechanical parts and can be removed entirely for deck stowage, which on a 71-metre ship is not a small consideration.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fLEcz_K7c_E\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">EDGE&rsquo;s own test footage of the HT-100. The intermeshing rotor heads are clearly visible on the mast, and so is how little the airframe moves when the machine is working.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"padding-top:22px\">A Navy of a Thousand People Buys a Fleet of Robots<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is the part that makes this genuinely unusual rather than merely technically interesting. The Angolan Navy is small. Standard reference works put it at around 1,000 personnel, down from roughly 4,200 in the early 1990s, operating out of Luanda, Lobito and Mo&ccedil;&acirc;medes with a handful of patrol craft. Decades of civil war left it as the service nobody funded.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Angola&rsquo;s problem, though, is enormous. It has a long Atlantic coastline, a very large exclusive economic zone, and a great deal of offshore oil infrastructure sitting in it. The Gulf of Guinea region is one of the world&rsquo;s more persistent maritime crime zones, and Angola has been pushing to take a larger role in the Yaound&eacute; Architecture, the regional framework for policing it. Illegal fishing, smuggling and piracy are all area-coverage problems, and area coverage is exactly what a navy with a handful of hulls cannot do.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which is why the leap makes sense. Angola is not buying a manned naval helicopter squadron, with its aircrew pipeline, its simulators, its maintenance cadre and its decades of accumulated institutional knowledge, because it does not have thirty years to build one. It is buying six autonomous machines and a training package, and skipping the part in the middle. The corvettes themselves are designed to handle a five-tonne manned helicopter if Angola ever wants one; the air group as ordered is entirely unmanned.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;This milestone demonstrates our ability to deliver a complete, fully autonomous system for shipborne operations, closely tailored to the customer&rsquo;s operational requirements.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Ishan Sahgal<\/strong> &mdash; Co-CEO and Founder, ANAVIA, in the EDGE Group press release, 11 September 2026<\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That word &ldquo;autonomous&rdquo; is load-bearing. The hard part of shipborne rotary flight has never been the cruise. It is the recovery: putting an aircraft onto a small steel rectangle that is simultaneously pitching, rolling, heaving and moving forward at speed, often at night, often in weather. Human pilots train for years to do it and still occasionally get it wrong.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ANAVIA&rsquo;s answer is radar. Active sensors on the aircraft continuously measure its position, velocity and attitude relative to the moving ship, independent of GPS, and fly the approach themselves. On touchdown a harpoon engages a grid in the deck and locks the aircraft down. The company quotes an operating envelope up to Sea State 3 and says no deck crew is required to steer the approach. Image: Naval News<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"padding-top:22px\">Abu Dhabi, Cherbourg, Bilten, Luanda<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now follow the money and the metal, because the supply chain here is the real story.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The parent contract was signed in February 2023 and is worth around &euro;1 billion. It was awarded to EDGE Group, the Emirati defence conglomerate created on 5 November 2019 by folding more than 25 existing state-linked companies into a single holding structure. EDGE&rsquo;s naval arm, Abu Dhabi Ship Building, is prime contractor. The package covers three BR71 MK II corvettes plus inshore patrol vessels, transport ships and an integrated logistics support deal.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But ADSB is not building all three ships. Two are being built by Constructions M&eacute;caniques de Normandie in Cherbourg, France; the third is being assembled by ADSB in Abu Dhabi under a technology transfer arrangement from CMN. The design itself is French, an evolution of the Baynunah class that CMN built for the UAE Navy. The first ship, <em>NRA Ekuikui II<\/em>, was launched at Cherbourg on 4 March 2026 and is due for delivery in October 2026, with the second and third following in April and October 2027.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the helicopters are Swiss. ANAVIA AG is based in Bilten, in canton Glarus; EDGE bought a 52 percent majority stake in November 2023, about nine months after winning the Angolan contract. The aircraft are marketed as ITAR-free, meaning they contain no US-controlled components, which for an African customer removes an entire category of export-licence risk and long-term spares uncertainty.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;Through close collaboration across EDGE, ADSB, and ANAVIA, we are combining naval platforms and unmanned systems to deliver an integrated solution aligned with Angola&rsquo;s operational requirements.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Khaled Al Zaabi<\/strong> &mdash; President, Platforms &amp; Systems, EDGE Group, in the EDGE Group press release, 11 September 2026<\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read that chain again: Emirati prime contractor, French hull, Swiss aircraft, Angolan flag. Twenty years ago a deal of this shape would have been signed in Moscow or Washington, and every component in it would have carried a political price tag. This one did not go near either capital. That is the arms trade in 2026, and Angola is a reasonable illustration of it rather than an outlier.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"padding-top:22px\">Where the HT-100 Sits Among Shipborne Drones<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shipborne rotary UAVs are not new, but the field has been unusually turbulent. Three reference points are useful.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schiebel&rsquo;s Austrian Camcopter S-100 is the incumbent and the commercial success story, flying from French, Royal Australian and Royal Navy vessels among others, with hundreds of airframes built and a long operational record. UMS Skeldar&rsquo;s V-200 is the European challenger, in service with a small group of navies and notable for pioneering fully automatic take-off and landing from a ship.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then there is the cautionary tale. Northrop Grumman&rsquo;s MQ-8 Fire Scout was the American attempt to do all of this at scale. The smaller MQ-8B was retired in October 2022. The larger MQ-8C, built on a Bell 407 airframe, has been reported as heading for retirement by the end of fiscal year 2026, after the US Navy had spent well over a billion dollars developing it and had flown it operationally for only a couple of years. The most powerful navy on earth tried the shipborne unmanned helicopter and, for now, walked away.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reason is instructive. Fire Scout was expensive, heavy, tied to a shrinking Littoral Combat Ship programme, and competing for deck space and budget against manned MH-60s that could do more. None of those pressures apply to Angola. There is no incumbent manned helicopter to defend, no rival programme to lose a budget fight to, and the aircraft in question weighs 120 kilograms rather than two and a half tonnes. Small navies are in some ways a better fit for this technology than large ones, because they have nothing to displace.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"padding-top:22px\">The Numbers, and How Much to Trust Them<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The published figures come from ANAVIA and EDGE, so treat them as manufacturer claims until somebody independent flies the thing. A 15 kW shaft turbine burning about nine litres an hour of Jet A-1, JP-5 or JP-8 &mdash; all fuels a warship already carries. Maximum take-off weight 120 kg, of which 60 kg is payload and fuel combined. Maximum airspeed 120 km\/h. Operating ceiling 4,000 m. Rotor diameter 3.75 m, fuselage 2.82 m long.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The endurance number deserves a caveat, because it is the one most often quoted without context. Six hours is the maximum, and ANAVIA&rsquo;s own endurance-versus-payload table shows that six-hour figure applies at around 9 kg of payload. Carry a heavier sensor and the time comes down steeply. This is not sleight of hand, it is how every aircraft works, but &ldquo;six-hour endurance&rdquo; and &ldquo;six-hour endurance with a useful gimbal&rdquo; are not the same sentence.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even so, the honest comparison is not against a manned helicopter. It is against nothing. An Angolan corvette without an embarked air vehicle sees as far as its mast-mounted radar and its horizon allow. With a small helicopter overhead, it can identify a contact at a distance and decide what to do while staying well outside anyone&rsquo;s reach. For an anti-piracy and fisheries-protection navy, that is most of the job.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"padding-top:22px\">What Happens Next<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Delivery of the aircraft is the easy half. The programme now moves to integration, fitting the systems and their control stations into the corvettes and wiring the video and track data into the combat management system, followed by sea trials of the combined package in Angolan waters.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is where programmes like this usually reveal their problems. Autonomous deck landing works beautifully on a test stand and less beautifully in a real swell with a real ship&rsquo;s airwake tumbling over the hangar face. Data links behave differently over water. Turbines and salt air have a long and unhappy history together.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first ship is due in October 2026, which is next month. If the Angolan Navy has two autonomous helicopters flying off <em>Ekuikui II<\/em> by the middle of 2027, it will have gone from a coastal force with almost no organic air capability to an operator of shipborne unmanned rotorcraft in about four years. Very few navies have ever moved that fast, and none of them did it without buying the whole apparatus from somebody else.
