It is where the most valuable military hardware in space lives: communications relays, missile-warning satellites, intelligence platforms. It is also, historically, very difficult to watch.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>On 9 September the US Space Force named Lake Kickapoo in Archer County, Texas, about 120 miles north-west of Fort Worth, as its preferred location for the third and final site of the Deep Space Advanced Radar Capability. Pending approvals, DARC will then have eyes on the entire geostationary belt, all day, in any weather.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The announcement came six days after Gen. Douglas A. It uses telescopes, which means it cannot see through cloud and cannot work in daylight. A radar does not care about either. DARC is designed to give continuous coverage with greater sensitivity, better accuracy and faster tracking than existing radars that can reach geostationary altitude, and to do it against smaller objects than anything currently fielded can resolve at that range.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The engineering approach is worth noting because it is not obvious. Rather than build one enormous dish, DARC combines multiple smaller arrays that function together as a single large aperture, a concept demonstrated at White Sands in 2021. Australia, Britain and the United States between them provide the geometry for overlapping, uninterrupted, 360-degree coverage of the geostationary belt. The Space Force talks about a contested domain, about characterising manoeuvres, about attributing malign activity from irresponsible actors, and about mitigating debris events. It does not name anybody. That restraint is worth preserving when reporting it: the release does not say China, and it does not say Russia.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>What the capability does is nonetheless clear enough. If an object in geostationary orbit changes position, DARC is designed to notice, at night, through weather, and to say what moved and where it went. In 2025 the Space Force considered dropping it as part of a change in acquisition strategy, and the financial year 2027 budget request restored it. That request now funds the programme through completion.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The timeline has also moved forward rather than back, which is unusual. The Government Accountability Office had previously reported operational acceptance in 2032; the Space Force is now targeting 2030 for Texas. Network-wide dates remain unsettled across official sources, and the Welsh site at Cawdor Barracks is still only a preferred location awaiting planning approval, so the full picture is not fixed yet.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>There is a pleasing historical symmetry to the location. Lake Kickapoo already hosted a two-mile transmitter array for the old Air Force Space Surveillance System, the original Space Fence.
