The target was Rhodesia, which had declared independence from Britain thirteen months earlier and which no country on earth recognised.<\/p>\n<p>The Rhodesian Air Force went on flying Hawker Hunters, English Electric Canberras and de Havilland Vampires for another fourteen years. Nine of its twelve Hunters were still airworthy in 1980. The aircraft had been bought in 1962 and no legal source of spares existed for any of them.<\/p>\n<p>How that was done is one of the more remarkable logistics and workshop stories in post-war aviation. Britain called it illegal. The Security Council passed condemnatory resolutions within days, then made the measures binding a year later.<\/p>\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;Arms, ammunition of all types, military aircraft, military vehicles, and equipment and materials for the manufacture and maintenance of arms and ammunition.&rdquo;<\/em><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>United Nations Security Council Resolution 232<\/strong> &mdash; 16 December 1966 &mdash; the first mandatory arms embargo the UN ever imposed<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>UNSCR 253 of 29 May 1968 turned that into comprehensive sanctions and created the Council&rsquo;s first sanctions committee. The measures were not lifted until UNSCR 460 on 21 December 1979.<\/p>\n<p>The war those aircraft were bought for is called the Bush War by Rhodesians and the Second Chimurenga by Zimbabweans. The Rhodesian Security Forces fought two liberation movements: ZANLA, the military wing of ZANU, Chinese-backed and based in Mozambique after 1975, and ZIPRA, the armed wing of ZAPU, Soviet-backed and based in Zambia. It ended at Lancaster House in December 1979 and with independence on 18 April 1980.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">What they had when the door closed<\/h2>\n<p>At UDI the Rhodesian Air Force was the second strongest air arm in sub-Saharan Africa: roughly 71 aircraft, including twelve <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/hawker-hunter\/\">Hunters<\/a>, seventeen <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/english-electric-canberra\/\">Canberras<\/a>, fourteen <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/de-havilland-vampire\/\">Vampires<\/a>, eight Dakotas, twelve Provosts and eight Alouette IIIs. All of it British or French, all of it bought legally before November 1965.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of the war the squadron list looked like this: No. 1 at Thornhill on Hunter FGA.9s; No. 2 on Vampires; No. 3 at New Sarum on Dakotas and Islanders, including an electronic-intelligence Dakota called Warthog and airborne command-post conversions; No. 4 on Aermacchi AL-60 Trojans, Reims-Cessna Lynxes and SF.260s; No. 5 on Canberras; No. 6 on Provosts and SF.260 Genets; No. 7 on Alouette IIIs; and No. 8, from 1978, on Agusta-Bell 205 Cheetahs.<\/p>\n<p>Look at what changed. The jets are all pre-UDI. Photo: Wikimedia Commons<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">How they kept it flying<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Engines.<\/strong> Britain seized fourteen Rolls-Royce Avon 207s that were in Rolls-Royce&rsquo;s hands on the day of UDI. In 1966 Rhodesia bought forty-two Avon 207s from Belgium. More were later recovered from Oman, reportedly out of the sand. That single Belgian purchase is the reason the Hunters flew at all.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The starter motors.<\/strong> This is the best engineering anecdote of the whole story. Before UDI, a Hunter starter motor went back to Rolls-Royce for overhaul every seventy starts, at &pound;14,000 a time. Rhodesian technicians taught themselves to strip and service them in-house for 76 pence per unit. The historian J.R.T. Wood records both figures. Canberra cartridge starters were replaced with compressed-air starting; the Provost&rsquo;s cartridge starter was replaced with a truck starter motor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>South Africa.<\/strong> The indispensable patron, and the reason the helicopter force existed at all. At peak, twenty-seven South African Air Force Alouette IIIs and their crews were flying inside No. 7 Squadron as &ldquo;Alpha Flight&rdquo;. Nominal Rhodesian strength was around fifty Alouettes. When the SAAF took its machines home in 1980, the Air Force of Zimbabwe inherited eight. That number tells you more about the real state of the air force than any serviceability statistic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Portugal.<\/strong> Until the Lisbon coup of April 1974, Mozambique was a friendly border. The Portuguese supplied the Mauser MG 151\/20 20 mm cannon, the weapon that made the gunship helicopter possible, ready for trials in February 1974. After 1974 the relationship inverted: Rhodesian Special Branch recruited Portuguese expatriates in Mozambique to steal aircraft, paying fifty thousand US dollars in cash for each of two Alouette IIIs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gabon.<\/strong> Jack Malloch&rsquo;s Air Trans Africa flew DC-7 freighters of Rhodesian beef to Libreville, where a Gabon-registered airline called Affretair carried it on to Europe. Arms and spares came back on the return leg. President Omar Bongo&rsquo;s protection made it work, and Malloch was decorated for it in September 1978. The British government knew: there are Foreign Office files on Affretair and a House of Lords debate about it in May 1976.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Oman.<\/strong> A second DC-8 was registered to Cargoman Ltd of Muscat in 1977, nominally owned by a Swiss aviation company, operated by Air Gabon and leased to CargOman. Hunter spares came out of Omani air force stocks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Italy.<\/strong> Ten Aermacchi AL-60s arrived in unmarked crates and were assembled at New Sarum from August 1967. In 1977 a batch of thirty-one SIAI-Marchetti SF.260s was sold, on paper, to the Comoros, and turned up in Rhodesia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>France.<\/strong> Twenty-one Reims-Cessna FTB.337G twins arrived from January 1976 in red-and-white civil colours and were armed locally as the Lynx. One deal got away: twenty-eight refurbished North American T-28s bought in 1966 and 1967 were on a ship within sight of Cape Town when Washington threatened French manufacturing licences, and the ship turned round.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And a scandal.<\/strong> The procurement machinery included a nominally private company holding the franchise to import helicopter spares from France and Spain. In 1978 the police Fraud Squad went into it; a senior customs officer killed himself; and on 20 July 1978 an in-camera High Court session convicted four men, including an under-secretary at the Ministry of Defence. They were fined and left in place, because they were indispensable. Rhodesian censors banned local reporting of it; the South African papers ran it anyway.<\/p>\n<p>The romantic version of this story is that Rhodesia was cut off for fifteen years and survived on ingenuity alone. It is not true. The Rhodesian weapons programmes were run by Group Captain P.J.H. Petter-Bowyer and named alphabetically.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Frantan.<\/strong> Short for &ldquo;frangible tank&rdquo;, a euphemism that turned into the name. A finned plastic-resin tank about 1.8 metres long holding roughly 73 litres of napalm, designed to shatter on impact. Trialled in 1969; carried by Provosts, Hunters and Lynxes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Alpha bomb.<\/strong> A spherical bomblet with a compressible casing, released from hoppers in a Canberra&rsquo;s bomb bay. It bounced roughly three metres off ground, water or mud and then airburst for fragmentation. It is the weapon most associated with the cross-border raids.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Golf bomb.<\/strong> The best-documented of them, and an object lesson in improvisation. After an abandoned fuel-air explosive programme, the designers substituted ANFO &mdash; prilled ammonium nitrate and diesel, mixed at first in a wheelbarrow and later in a concrete mixer. The finished weapon weighed 450 kg, looked like a metre-and-a-half gas cylinder, carried a one-metre proboscis to force an airburst, and was initiated simultaneously front and rear to squeeze the blast flat across the ground. It was delivered by a Hunter in a sixty-degree dive and cleared for operations in March 1977. A pair of them flattened bush over an area of about 90 by 135 metres. Later versions sandwiched thousands of chopped ten-millimetre steel rods between double steel skins. There was a scaled-down &ldquo;Mini Golf&rdquo; for the Lynx.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Fireforce<\/h2>\n<p>The tactic the Rhodesian Air Force is studied for is Fireforce: vertical envelopment of a located group of insurgents by a small heliborne force, with the commander overhead.<\/p>\n<p>The enabling technology was the Portuguese-supplied 20 mm cannon. Fitted into an Alouette III firing to port, it turned the helicopter into the K-Car &mdash; Killer, or Command, depending on who is telling it &mdash; orbiting at about 800 feet with the Fireforce commander aboard. G-Cars were trooping Alouettes with twin 7.62 mm machine guns, each carrying a four-man stick. A Dakota dropped paratroops into stop lines and a Lynx provided light strike. Fuel came forward by road convoy or was air-dropped in drums.<\/p>\n<p>It was not invented from nothing in 1965. It crystallised around the 1974 arrival of the cannon, and drew on Malayan, Kenyan, Portuguese and Israeli practice. Both facts belong in the same article.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Operation Dingo, 23 to 25 November 1977.<\/strong> A strike on the Chimoio complex in Mozambique and then on Tembu&ecirc;, using nine Hunters, six Vampires, six Canberras, about twenty-one Alouettes and three Dakotas, with roughly two hundred SAS and Rhodesian Light Infantry troops. A civilian DC-8 was flown over ten minutes ahead as a deception, so that the cluster-bomb strike would arrive during the morning parade. The parade had been cancelled. Rhodesia lost one soldier and one pilot, Flight Lieutenant Phillip Haigh, who was killed force-landing a battle-damaged Vampire.<\/p>\n<p>The Chimoio complex genuinely contained ZANLA&rsquo;s forward headquarters, training camps, an anti-aircraft training camp and stores. It also contained a hospital, a maternity clinic, schools, a college and a care home for the wounded. Both of those lists come from the same sources. Rhodesian claims ran from 1,200 to 3,000 killed; most scholarship puts it above a thousand, of whom hundreds were civilians. Zimbabwe calls it the Chimoio Massacre and there are mass graves and a national shrine on the site.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Operation Gatling, 19 October 1978.<\/strong> The &ldquo;Green Leader&rdquo; raid &mdash; frequently and wrongly said to be Chimoio. It was Westlands Farm near Lusaka, in Zambia, and the target was ZIPRA. Eight Canberras and eight Hunters went in while the Canberra formation leader took control of Zambian airspace from Lusaka Tower for about a quarter of an hour, warning that Rhodesian fighters were orbiting the Zambian airfields and would shoot down anything that took off. <em>The Guardian<\/em> reported the substance of that transmission on 23 October 1978.<\/p>\n<p>Rhodesia claimed 1,500 ZIPRA killed. ZAPU&rsquo;s historian describes Freedom Camp as a refugee camp and gives 351 boys and girls killed. The judgement worth quoting comes from two military historians who are broadly sympathetic to the Rhodesian military story.<\/p>\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;Impossible to distinguish innocent refugees from young ZIPRA recruits.&rdquo;<\/em><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Paul Moorcraft and Peter McLaughlin<\/strong> &mdash; <em>The Rhodesian War: A Military History<\/em>, Pen &amp; Sword, 2008 edition, page 155, on the Gatling raid<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>The two Viscounts.<\/strong> Gatling was retaliation. On 3 September 1978 ZIPRA shot down Air Rhodesia Flight 825, the Viscount <em>Hunyani<\/em>, with a Strela-2 shoulder-launched missile minutes after take-off from Kariba. Thirty-eight of the fifty-six on board died in the crash. Of the eighteen survivors, five walked to a village looking for water; guerrillas reached the wreck and killed ten of the remaining survivors on the ground. Eight people lived.<\/p>\n<p>On 12 February 1979 a second Viscount, <em>Umniati<\/em>, was shot down on the same route. All fifty-nine aboard died. It remains the deadliest air disaster in the country&rsquo;s history. Air Rhodesia then fitted exhaust shrouding and low-emission matt paint to its Viscounts, which is a sentence that tells you what civil aviation had become there.<\/p>\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/W4NdqeV0o4U\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>An overview of the air war from an aviation history channel.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">1980, and what happened next<\/h2>\n<p>On 18 April 1980 the Rhodesian Air Force became the Air Force of Zimbabwe. The squadron numbers carried over. So did most of the technicians, for a while.<\/p>\n<p>Honest caveat: the granular numbers on what state the fleet was actually in are not on the open internet. No published airframe-hours or fatigue-index figures for the RhAF jets exist online, and the often-quoted &ldquo;85% serviceability in 1978&rdquo; traces back to a paper whose own cited source does not contain the figure. What is documented is that the air staff had known since 1965 that fatigue, spares and obsolete electronics would erode the force; that one Canberra was lost when a fuselage frame failed in fatigue and the wings came off; and that the service struggled to keep technicians whose skills were worth a great deal to any airline.<\/p>\n<p>Then, on 25 July 1982, somebody put incendiary time-delay devices into the air intakes of aircraft parked at Thornhill. The accounts vary &mdash; around thirteen aircraft destroyed or damaged, roughly nine million dollars, close to half the combat strength. Four brand-new BAe Hawks, ten days old, were among them, along with nine Hunters.<\/p>\n<p>Six senior white officers were arrested and tortured. Justice Enoch Dumbutshena acquitted them on 31 August 1983, ruling the confessions inadmissible because they had been obtained under torture. They were re-detained within minutes under emergency powers. Two were deported; the rest were released in December.<\/p>\n<p>Who actually did it is no longer speculation. The historian Stuart Doran, working from a recovered South African government memorandum, published the paper trail in 2024.<\/p>\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;A Hunter pilot who is leaving the Zimbabwe Air Force on 31\/7\/82&hellip; is quite prepared to undertake the destruction of Hunter aircraft at Thornhill.&rdquo;<\/em><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Gray Branfield, South African Defence Force Project Barnacle<\/strong> &mdash; memorandum to Charl Naud&eacute;, 22 June 1982, published by Stuart Doran in the <em>Daily Maverick<\/em>, 3 March 2024<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Robert Mugabe&rsquo;s view of the legal system that had acquitted the officers was expressed in Ireland the following month, and Doran records it: he called it &ldquo;a stupid ass&rdquo; and &ldquo;one of the stupidities of our colonial past&rdquo;.<\/p>\n<p>The aircraft outlasted all of it. Zimbabwe retired its Canberras in 1983. It kept flying Hunters until No. 1 Squadron stood down in January 2002, which made Zimbabwe the last operational Hunter user in the world, and airframes were still being flown for flypasts as late as 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Forty years after Britain seized fourteen engines to stop them flying.<\/p>\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/atHEDbZDgPw\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>An English Electric Canberra displaying. Rhodesia&rsquo;s were the earlier B.2 bomber variant, bought in the late 1950s.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">What to be careful about<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Green Leader was not Chimoio.<\/strong> Operation Gatling, October 1978, hit Zambia and ZIPRA. Operation Dingo, November 1977, hit Mozambique and ZANLA. Conflating them is the single most common error in this subject.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The &ldquo;85% serviceability&rdquo; figure has no traceable basis.<\/strong> It is everywhere. Its cited source does not contain it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Flight 827 had no survivors.<\/strong> Claims that survivors were murdered after the second Viscount shoot-down conflate it with the first. The ground killings happened only after Flight 825.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Zimbabwe&rsquo;s Canberras did not fight in the Congo.<\/strong> They were retired in 1983. The 1998 DRC strikes were flown by Hawks and F-7s.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Agusta-Bell 205s&rsquo; route is unresolved.<\/strong> One set of sources says eleven aircraft direct from Agusta via Oman; another says seven from Israel via the Comoros.
