President Donald Trump was at the retreat for the weekend. The F-16 dispensed flares to get the pilot's attention, then escorted the aeroplane out. Nobody was hurt and nothing was damaged.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The detail that makes this one worth reading is not the intercept. The Friday before the intercept, 1st Air Force &mdash; the NORAD component responsible for air defence over the continental United States &mdash; posted a public warning naming the exact town.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"max-width:550px;margin:0 auto 28px\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?id=2100703139502461330&theme=light\" style=\"width:100%;height:400px;border:none;overflow:hidden\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>NORAD's own account followed with a blunter version of the same message. It reached across the state line to cover Gettysburg, Hanover, Spring Grove, Chambersburg and Shippensburg in Pennsylvania, and Westminster, Frederick, Hagerstown and Germantown in Maryland. Plenty of people under it heard the jet go through. Residents across Adams County and central Pennsylvania reported seeing or hearing a low, fast F-16 that morning.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Why a Fighter Pilot Fires Flares at a Light Aircraft<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>Flares look like an attack. They are the opposite &mdash; they are what a fighter pilot reaches for when every quieter option has already failed.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>An intercept starts with radio calls on the emergency frequencies, then a visual join-up where the fighter slides into the light aircraft's field of view and rocks its wings. If the pilot is head-down, wearing a headset tuned to the wrong frequency, or simply not expecting company, none of that lands. NORAD has published near-identical releases through 2026 for airspace violations over Palm Beach, the National Capital Region, Bedminster in New Jersey, New York, Fort Bragg in North Carolina and Geneva in Ohio. Several outlets reported that this was the second time in recent months that an aircraft had been intercepted in the Camp David restriction with the president in residence.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The pattern is the point. The alert mission that scrambled on Saturday morning exists because on one September morning in 2001 there was almost nothing to scramble. Two and a half decades later, a wrong turn over a Maryland mountain still gets a fighter alongside within minutes.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>NORAD has not said what will happen to the pilot.
