In plain terms: the Army wants the helicopters badly enough that Sikorsky can start cutting metal before the two sides have agreed what the final price will be.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>That is not unusual, and it is not a scandal. It is what you do when a production line has a gap coming and you would rather keep the workforce and the supply chain intact than save a few months of negotiation and pay for a cold restart later.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The same contract started life in April 2026 as a modest $65 million advance procurement deal, buying long-lead materials for ten aircraft. That figure is the delegation's, not the Army's, and multi-year procurement deals have a habit of shrinking between announcement and signature.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Still, the direction of travel is clear enough. A helicopter that first flew during the Ford administration is being ordered in batches that will deliver in 2028, with a follow-on contract in negotiation and a service-life study looking past 2050. Replacements are hard.
