Pete Bennett told North Wales Live that the aircraft was visibly in difficulty before it had finished accelerating.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;I watched it take off, like we have watched of planes take off before. I knew straight away that it was in trouble, right on take off there was an orange flame and as it accelerated it was basically on fire. As it gained altitude the flame disappeared but it was clearly in trouble. It climbed at an aggressive pitch, like the pilot trying to gain altitude. Video shared within the hour matches his description: the jet is porpoising at low speed and a high angle of attack, nose swinging, before both seats fire and the aircraft falls away.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>That combination &mdash; a visible flame on the takeoff roll, a climb that runs out of energy, a nose that will not stay where it is put &mdash; points at a loss of thrust rather than a control failure, though nothing has been established and the RAF has not offered a cause. What is clear is that the crew had very little height and very little time, and used both correctly.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"max-width:550px;margin:0 auto 28px\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?id=2102738102959972823&theme=light\" style=\"width:100%;height:520px;border:none;overflow:hidden\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The aircraft came down in farmland. Videos show it passing close to buildings before impact, and the fireball afterwards was large enough to be visible across a wide stretch of the island. North Wales Police, the RAF, North Wales Fire and Rescue, the Welsh Ambulance Service and an air ambulance all responded. That is standard after a loss with no known cause, but it is not a small decision, because of what the Hawk does.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The Defence Secretary, Wes Streeting, confirmed on X that an investigation had been launched.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #3568e0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;My thoughts are first and foremost with the pilots. We will provide further updates in due course.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Wes Streeting<\/strong> &mdash; UK Secretary of State for Defence, posting on X, 23 September 2026<\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The RAF itself said only that the incident involved one of its Hawk T2s flying out of RAF Valley, and that an investigation is under way and it would not comment further. The older Hawk T1 is the aircraft flown by the Red Arrows; LBC reported that the display team&rsquo;s flying was paused as well, while Press Association copy carried by other outlets said it was not yet clear whether the team would be affected. The Red Arrows were not due to fly again until the weekend in any case.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"max-width:550px;margin:0 auto 28px\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?id=2102818541359501642&theme=light\" style=\"width:100%;height:520px;border:none;overflow:hidden\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Why Pausing the Hawk Matters More Than It Looks<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>RAF Valley is not an ordinary station. It is where No. 4 Flying Training School turns students into fast-jet pilots, and it is the gate every British <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/eurofighter-typhoon\/\">Typhoon<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/f-35-lightning-ii\/\">F-35<\/a> pilot has to pass through. If the Hawks are not flying, the pipeline behind them is not moving either.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>That pipeline has been under scrutiny for years. The RAF took delivery of its first Hawk T2 in 2009 and began training on the type in April 2012. It has 28 of them, so Wednesday removed roughly one aircraft in twenty-eight from a fleet with no spare capacity, and there is nothing else to train on: the surviving Hawk T1s are concentrated on the Red Arrows at RAF Waddington. Britain has no domestic replacement in production, and the Ministry of Defence has already gone to industry asking what a successor might look like &mdash; a search we covered in August.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">They Are Numbers 7,828 and 7,829<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a ledger for this. Martin-Baker, which built the seats that fired over Anglesey, has counted every life its seats have saved since Bernard Lynch first rode a test rig four feet eight inches into the air on 24 January 1945. The company publishes the running list, and the two Valley crew are now on it: entries 7,828 and 7,829, dated 23 September 2026, listed simply as an RAF Hawk T2 from which both pilots ejected successfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The entries before them give a sense of the rate. Number 7,827 was a Hungarian Air Force JAS-39C Gripen on 24 August 2026. Before that, a US Marine Corps F-35B on 31 July, a Marine F\/A-18D on 13 June, and a US Navy T-45C on 26 May from which both crew got out. Five entries in four months, across four air arms and five aircraft types.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Martin-Baker is careful to note that it is not automatically told when one of its seats is used. The company relies on official communication from operators or confirmed accident reports, which means the published total is a floor rather than a precise figure. Survivors are invited into the Ejection Tie Club, founded in 1957, and receive a tie, a certificate and a membership pin. A pause that turns into a fleet-wide inspection after a technical finding is a different problem, and one the RAF has faced with the Hawk before. Until the investigators say what stopped this aircraft climbing, nobody knows which of those two this is.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">What Happens Now<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>The wreckage has been located and the site secured, with the public asked to stay away. A military air accident investigation will now work through the engine, the fuel system, the maintenance record and the recorded data, and that takes months rather than days. An interim finding that clears the fleet could come much sooner.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Two things are already settled, though. A pair of Martin-Baker seats worked at low altitude in a nose-high, low-speed attitude, which is exactly the regime they are hardest pressed in.
