System development did not formally begin until December 2015. The aircraft delivered on Tuesday therefore arrived roughly twenty-five and a half years after the political commitment and ten years and nine months after engineering work started in earnest.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Those are not embarrassing numbers for a clean-sheet fighter. They are close to normal. What is unusual is that a country with no prior experience of designing a supersonic combat aircraft finished one at all, complete with an indigenous AESA radar, an electronic warfare suite and beyond-visual-range missile integration.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"max-width:550px;margin:0 auto 28px\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?id=2102664373118640352&theme=light\" style=\"width:100%;height:520px;border:none;overflow:hidden\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The airframe that arrived at Yecheon is a two-seat Block I aircraft. It went to the 156th Fighter Squadron, a unit with its own history: a former F-4E Phantom II squadron under the 16th Fighter Wing, disbanded in 2012 and reactivated on 1 June this year specifically to operate the KF-21.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">A Delivery Is Not a Capability<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>The Air Force Chief of Staff, Gen. Son Sug-rag, framed the handover as a transfer of responsibility rather than a finish line.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;Up until yesterday was the time for the Boramae project&rsquo;s policymakers and developers. From today onward, it is the Air Force&rsquo;s time.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Gen. A delivered fighter is not a deployable squadron. Pilots have to be converted, maintainers trained, spare engines bought, ground equipment fielded, weapons procedures written and sortie generation rates proved. Block I is deliberately weighted towards air-to-air work, which narrows what the type can do in the short term and makes the 2032 figure the one that matters.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>They are replacing retired F-4 Phantoms and ageing KF-5s, and will fly alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/f-15e-strike-eagle\/\">F-15K<\/a> Slam Eagles, KF-16s and <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/f-35-lightning-ii\/\">F-35As<\/a>.
