Disengaging from a fight, separating from a target, getting a formation back together and turning it towards home all take time and fuel, and none of it happens instantly. Joker is a decision point, not a command. A pilot can fly past joker with good reason, and sometimes does. Bingo is different: passing bingo means eating into the fuel that was supposed to get the aircraft onto a runway, and there is no version of that which improves with time.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The discipline this creates is one of the quiet differences between military and civil flying. An airliner that is low on fuel declares minimum fuel or an emergency and gets priority.
