That is the interesting part.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>On 30 September 2026 Boeing and Ethiopian Airlines announced an order for ten freighters: two 777Fs, the twin-engine workhorse that has hauled express cargo since 2009, and eight 777-8 Freighters, the 777X-based replacement that has not yet flown and is not expected to deliver before 2028. Africa&rsquo;s largest carrier has just placed the biggest bet on that aeroplane of any airline on the continent.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Airlines order aircraft years ahead all the time. What makes this one worth reading twice is the timing. Boeing is simultaneously asking regulators for permission to keep building the aeroplane the 777-8F is supposed to replace, because the replacement is running late enough that the gap has become a regulatory problem.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f4f6f9;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:18px 22px;margin:28px 0;font-size:15px;line-height:1.75\"><p style=\"margin:0 0 10px;font-weight:700;color:#0d1117;font-size:17px\">Quick Facts<\/p><p style=\"margin:5px 0\"><strong>The order<\/strong> &mdash; eight Boeing 777-8 Freighters and two current-production 777 Freighters, announced by Boeing and Ethiopian Airlines on 30 September 2026.<\/p><p style=\"margin:5px 0\"><strong>The buyer<\/strong> &mdash; Ethiopian Airlines Group, Africa&rsquo;s largest carrier, whose cargo arm already serves more than 70 markets across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and North America.<\/p><p style=\"margin:5px 0\"><strong>Existing freighters<\/strong> &mdash; 12 Boeing 777Fs, two 767Fs and four 737-800 converted freighters.<\/p><p style=\"margin:5px 0\"><strong>The new aeroplane<\/strong> &mdash; the 777-8F uses the 777X wing and GE9X engines. Boeing puts its maximum structural payload at 118 tonnes, against 107 tonnes for the 777F.<\/p><p style=\"margin:5px 0\"><strong>Backlog<\/strong> &mdash; Ethiopian now has 18 Boeing 777s on order, this freighter deal plus eight 777-9 passenger jets committed in 2024.<\/p><p style=\"margin:5px 0\"><strong>Timing<\/strong> &mdash; first 777-8F deliveries are currently expected in 2028, after a run of 777X delays.<\/p><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Two aeroplanes you can have now, eight you cannot<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>The split in the order is the whole story. The two 777Fs are off-the-shelf: Boeing has delivered hundreds of them, Ethiopian already flies twelve, and the type has quietly become the default large freighter for anyone who does not want to feed four engines. The eight 777-8Fs are something else. They are a commitment to an aeroplane that is still being assembled for the first time in Everett.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Mechanically the 777-8F borrows the parts of the 777X that matter for cargo: the long composite wing with its folding tips, and the GE9X, currently the largest commercial jet engine in service. The 777F cannot be certified indefinitely: a tightening emissions standard takes effect on 1 January 2028, and the 777F does not meet it. The successor was supposed to arrive first. It has not.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>In September 2026 the FAA granted Boeing an exemption allowing airworthiness certificates for up to 35 more 777Fs from 1 January 2028 through 1 January 2031. The agency&rsquo;s own wording acknowledged the practical benefit of permitting limited 777F production until its successor is available. The airline was the first African operator to sign for the 777X at all, with eight 777-9 passenger aircraft in 2024. This one is also a verdict on the schedule. Eight 777-8Fs is a serious commitment from an airline that will be flying 777Fs for years before the first of them arrives, and it only makes sense if Ethiopian believes 2028 will hold.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Boeing has given the market plenty of reasons for scepticism on that point. The 777-9 has slipped from 2020 to 2027 in a series of announcements, and the freighter sits behind it in the certification queue.
