Four days after police arrested five men near RAF Fairford, the Gloucestershire base that hosts American bombers, Prime Minister Andy Burnham told the BBC on 30 September that there are strong indications Iran played a part.

It is the first time London has publicly linked Tehran to the incident. Iran's embassy has rejected the claim as unfounded and malicious. Police say the counter-terrorism investigation is ongoing, and no one has been charged.

Quick Facts

Location: RAF Fairford, Gloucestershire, England

Arrests: Five British men aged 23 to 25, from London

When: Early hours of Sunday 27 September 2026, near the village of Whelford

Suspected offences: Explosives Act offences and preparing acts of terrorism

Found: No explosive devices; petrol recovered from vehicles

Status: All five released on bail; no charges announced

Attribution: PM Andy Burnham: "strong indications" Iran played a part (30 September)

What Happened at Fairford

According to Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor of the Metropolitan Police, officers were called out in the early hours of Sunday after receiving a range of information, including a call from a member of the public about several vehicles acting suspiciously close to the base. Five men were arrested near Whelford, about a mile from the airfield.

Police found no improvised explosive devices, but recovered petrol from the vehicles. In July 2026, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps called RAF Fairford a legitimate target and warned that any British base used for attacks on Iranian territory would face retaliation. Iran denies any involvement and accuses London of feeding what its embassy called Iranophobia propaganda.

For now, the bombers keep flying.
