A day later the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island followed with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit aboard. According to the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> and <em>Axios<\/em>, citing US officials, both are heading for the Middle East, where the US has been at war with Iran since the end of February.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question is what happens when they get there. If the two carriers already in the region stay, the US would have three carrier strike groups around Iran for the first time since April. If not, the Roosevelt is simply the next shift. According to Task &amp; Purpose, the Roosevelt is the fifth of the Navy&rsquo;s 11 carriers committed to the Iran war, after the Gerald R. Ford, the Abraham Lincoln, the George H.W. Bush and the George Washington. The Lincoln is only now heading home to San Diego after a deployment of more than 300 days, closing in on the Ford&rsquo;s record.
