On a typical day, ten of them are fully mission-capable. That is the baseline the Ministry of Defence itself published on 1 October, when it extended Airbus&rsquo;s contract to maintain the RAF A400M Atlas fleet.<\/p>\r\n<p>The deal is worth &pound;190 million and is meant to lift that daily figure to 13 by the end of 2027. The MoD calls it a 30 per cent improvement in availability, and the percentage is honest. So is the arithmetic underneath it.<\/p>\r\n<p>Ten out of 22 is 45 per cent, the share Airforce Technology picked out of the announcement. Thirteen would be 59 per cent. Defence Equipment and Support made a direct award to Airbus on 8 September, extending the existing in-service support contract from 1 October 2026 to 30 April 2029, with an option for twelve more months. The scope covers base maintenance, line maintenance and continuing airworthiness management for the Atlas airframe.<\/p>\r\n<p>The work stays at Airbus&rsquo;s UK Support Centre at RAF Brize Norton, where it sustains more than 240 Airbus staff and 110 primary sub-contract staff. The supplier of record, Airbus Military Sociedad Limitada, sits in Getafe, near Madrid, and trades in Britain as Airbus Defence and Space Limited. The notice lists Spain alongside the UK as a place of performance.<\/p>\r\n<p>The price also came down. A transparency notice for the same procurement in October 2025 had valued the extension at &pound;265 million. By boosting availability of these aircraft, we&rsquo;re strengthening the RAF&rsquo;s ability to conduct global operations and deliver on NATO commitments when it matters most, while backing UK jobs and delivering value for money for taxpayers.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Luke Pollard<\/strong> &mdash; Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, UK Ministry of Defence (GOV.UK press release, 1 October 2026)<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Where the other twelve are<\/h2>\r\n<p>The MoD has explained the gap before. In a June 2025 letter to the Commons Defence Committee, the then procurement minister, Maria Eagle, broke the 22-aircraft fleet down: at any given time two or three are in Spain for capability upgrades, two or three are in scheduled base maintenance, and two to four are classed as long-term unserviceable.<\/p>\r\n<p>That left an operating fleet averaging 14 aircraft, of which engineers could sustain about 70 per cent as fit for purpose: nine or ten aircraft, or around 45 per cent of the delivered fleet. Daily averages crept from 9.4 in 2023 to 10.1 in July 2024. The size of the operating fleet, the letter said, had historically been squeezed by a lack of propeller gearboxes, core engines and propeller assemblies.<\/p>\r\n<p>The October 2025 notice added a franker admission. Justifying the direct award, it said the A400M &ldquo;is yet to attain full military operating capability&rdquo;, with Airbus still upgrading the aircraft in stages and running a concurrent retrofit programme, so its build standard keeps changing. The 22nd and final Atlas had reached Brize Norton only that May. When the MoD announced a &pound;410 million Airbus support contract in January 2017, it had expected all 22 in service by 2019.<\/p>\r\n<p>Since then the Atlas has carried the tactical load. The RAF describes it as having &ldquo;taken over primacy as the predominant RAF Air Movements platform&rdquo;. On 29 August an Atlas from Brize Norton landed on Jan Mayen, the remote Norwegian island in the Arctic north of the Greenland-Iceland-UK gap, and offloaded US Marines, Royal Marines and two Joint Light Tactical Vehicles for Operation Atlantic City.<\/p>\r\n<p>Sorties like that are where availability bites. Britain bought it through OCCAR, the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation, alongside France, Germany, Spain, Turkey, Belgium and Luxembourg. Its wings come from Airbus in the UK, final assembly is in Seville, and its TP400-D6 engines come from Europrop International, a consortium of Rolls-Royce, Safran, MTU and ITP Aero.<\/p>\r\n<p>Support follows the same logic. The 2025 notice describes Airbus as the provider of common in-service support to every partner nation under the Global Support Step, and the 2017 announcement reported that spares pooling with France had already saved each country around &pound;22 million. Engines run on a separate track: a &pound;47 million Rolls-Royce contract for Maintenance Level 2 support of the TP400 at Filton also starts on 1 October 2026.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #5C91FF;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;Airbus is proud to be a trusted partner to the Ministry of Defence, and this contract extension reinforces that commitment.
