A MiG-29 had been hit by a Russian missile during a combat mission. The pilot had ejected. He had not survived.<\/p>\n<p>His name was Captain Marat Redvanovych Mambetov, a flight commander in the 40th Tactical Aviation Brigade, the unit Ukrainians know as the \"Ghost of Kyiv\" brigade. According to the Kyiv Independent, he was 25 years old. The <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/air-forces\/ukrainian-air-force\/\">Ukrainian Air Force<\/a> said he was flying missile and bomb strikes against Russian forces on the front line when his jet was struck.<\/p>\n<p>Every pilot lost in this war is a hole that Ukraine cannot easily fill. It gave no location beyond the front line and did not say what type of missile hit the aircraft, whether it came from the ground or from a Russian fighter.<\/p>\n<p>The ejection detail is the cruel part. Mambetov got out of the stricken Fulcrum, which is often the moment a crew survives. Its nickname comes from the most famous story of those first days: a lone MiG-29 pilot said to be shooting down Russian jets over the capital.<\/p>\n<p>The Air Force later described the Ghost of Kyiv as a legend, a collective image of the pilots defending the city rather than one real ace. In Ukrainian hands it has become a strike aircraft, flying low and fast to deliver weapons against targets on the front, often in the most heavily defended airspace of the war.<\/p>\n<p>Ukrainian MiG-29s have been adapted to carry Western guided weapons, which lets them strike from further away than with old Soviet bombs. But the pool of airframes is finite, and pilots like Mambetov, trained and combat-experienced, are even harder to replace.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">What it means<\/h2>\n<p>Ukraine does not publish its aircraft losses as a running total, and neither side's claims can be independently verified. What can be said is that the MiG-29 remains one of the workhorses of Ukraine's air war, alongside the F-16s and Mirage 2000s supplied by the West, and that it is flying missions with a very thin margin.<\/p>\n<p>Captain Marat Mambetov flew one of them on 1 October.
