On Friday, one of them was doing a routine maritime patrol over Scarborough Shoal when a Chinese J-16 fighter came to play.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the J-16 repeatedly approached the <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/air-forces\/philippine-air-force\/\">Philippine Air Force<\/a> C-208, manoeuvred ahead of it and around it, and positioned itself in the patrol aircraft's wake. Manila calls it an aviation safety risk. One was identified as a J-16, China's heavy, twin-engine, two-seat strike fighter, a cousin of the Russian Su-30.<\/p>\n<p>Colonel Xerxes Trinidad, chief of the AFP Public Affairs Office, said the J-16 repeatedly approached and manoeuvred in close proximity to the Philippine aircraft. The fighter moved ahead of the Caravan and around it, then slotted into its wake. It is not. A fighter like the J-16 weighs many times more than a Caravan and leaves turbulent air behind it, and fast jet manoeuvring close to a light aircraft creates exactly the kind of disturbed air that can flip a small plane. Crossing the nose of a slow turboprop with a fighter is the aerial equivalent of a lorry cutting across a cyclist. Nobody needs to touch anybody for things to go badly wrong.<\/p>\n<p>The two aircraft are also mismatched in every other way. The C-208 is a single-engine utility turboprop that the Philippine Air Force uses for surveillance. The J-16 is a supersonic fighter that can carry long-range missiles. Philippine media reported that two China Coast Guard vessels obstructed a Philippine Coast Guard operation against suspected dynamite fishing near Pag-asa Island, sounding horns and issuing radio challenges, while a Chinese navy helicopter circled overhead four times. Philippine media described the J-16 encounter as the second of its kind at Scarborough in roughly a month.<\/p>\n<p>No one was hurt this time.
