It names no price and no delivery date. What it does name is a bomber that first flew in 1952 and a missile built to find a warship on its own in the middle of an ocean.

Naval Air Systems Command says it intends to negotiate, sole-source, with Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control for “efforts associated with LRASM integration on the B-52 aircraft platform.” In plain terms: the B-52 Stratofortress is being lined up to carry the AGM-158C Long Range Anti-Ship Missile, the stealthy weapon that already rides on the B-1B and the Navy’s Super Hornets.

The idea is not new. It was first floated in 2019 and then went quiet for the better part of six years. What has changed is the size of the ocean the United States expects to fight over, and how few platforms can reach the middle of it with a full magazine.

Quick Facts

Notice: NAVAIR special notice, “LRASM B-52 Integration and Test Support”, posted 7 October 2026 on SAM.gov

Contractor: Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control (sole source), place of performance Orlando, Florida

Contract type: Cost-plus-fixed-fee delivery order under basic ordering agreement N00019-23-G-0002; no value published

Scope: Missile software updates, associated testing, test asset repair and failure review boards

Missile: AGM-158C LRASM, derived from the AGM-158B JASSM-ER, 1,000 lb-class penetrating warhead, range publicly reported at a little over 200 miles

B-52 load: Already carries up to 20 JASSMs, which share LRASM’s basic dimensions

Other LRASM carriers: B-1B (early operational capability 2018), F/A-18E/F (2019), B-2A (revealed June 2026), with F-35 and P-8A integration in progress

What the notice actually says

The notice on B-52 LRASM integration, solicitation number N00019-26-RFPREQ-WPM201-0237, is a pre-award announcement rather than a contract. NAVAIR says it will place a cost-plus-fixed-fee delivery order against an existing basic ordering agreement with Lockheed, and lists the work as missile software updates, associated testing, test asset repair and failure review boards. Capability statements from other firms are due by 22 October, though the Navy makes clear it does not expect any.

Its justification is blunt. Lockheed, the notice says, is the sole designer, developer, manufacturer and integrator of LRASM, and only Lockheed holds the technical data to do the job in the time required. Aviation Week reported the notice the day it appeared; Air & Space Forces Magazine followed on 8 October with the first detailed account.

There is no mention of new pylons, new launchers or airframe modification. The words are “missile software”. That points to the hard part of B-52 LRASM integration being on the weapon’s side of the interface rather than the bomber’s.

An LRASM prototype separates from a B-1B Lancer during DARPA’s first free-flight test in August 2013. The B-1B became the first operational LRASM carrier in 2018. DARPA photo / public domain

Why the BUFF is an easy fit

LRASM is a JASSM-ER with a different brain. It keeps the stealthy airframe, the turbofan and the penetrating warhead, and swaps in a sensor package designed to locate and identify a ship without a constant feed from outside. The B-52 already carries up to 20 JASSMs, and the two missiles share similar dimensions.

That matters, because physical carriage is usually the slowest and most expensive part of putting a new weapon on an aircraft. Here the racks and the rotary launcher already exist. What remains is teaching the bomber’s stores management system and the missile to talk to each other, and proving the combination with test shots.

Naval News reported in November 2019 that a 10 million dollar allocation in fiscal 2019 had funded early study work, with Navy and Air Force teams involved. Nothing visible followed for years. The new notice is the first public sign that the effort has moved from studies to a funded integration and test task.

“A handful of B-52s will be able to deliver more weapons on maritime targets and do so over much longer ranges than the Navy’s carrier-based aircraft per day.”
Col. A carrier air wing generates sorties in pairs and fours, each Super Hornet carrying a handful of large missiles. A bomber launched from a base thousands of miles from the threat can put a double-digit salvo into the air on a single sortie, and refuel on the way home.

Lockheed Martin’s official LRASM film: launch, autonomous routing and terminal attack on a moving ship target.

Bombers as the maritime strike force

The B-52 would be the third Air Force bomber to carry the missile. The B-1B Lancer was the test aircraft from the very first LRASM drop in 2013 and reached early operational capability with it in 2018. The Navy followed on the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet in 2019, and Australia’s Super Hornets have since gone operational with it too, as Afterburner covered in RAAF Super Hornets Go Live With LRASM and JASSM-ER.

In June the Air Force disclosed something it had never acknowledged before: a B-2 Spirit had fired an LRASM into the decommissioned amphibious ship ex-USS Juneau during Valiant Shield 2026 in the Western Pacific. We wrote it up in The B-2 Just Became a Ship-Killer. Flight testing on the F-35 began with the F-35C in 2024 and expanded to the F-35B in 2025, and Lockheed lists the P-8 Poseidon among its ongoing integration efforts.

Add the B-52 and every US heavy bomber type in service could launch the same stealthy ship-killer.

“The Air Force’s bomber force will be our military’s predominant maritime strike force, considering the number of anti-ship cruise missiles they can carry per sortie and deliver over intercontinental ranges, if necessary.”
Col. Mark Gunzinger (USAF, ret.) — Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies, to Air & Space Forces Magazine, 8 October 2026

He added that the move would let commanders strike maritime targets while launching from airbases in lower-threat areas, without putting aircraft carriers at risk. For the B-52, which has no stealth of its own, that is the whole proposition: stay outside the defended zone and let a stealthy missile do the last few hundred kilometres.

Not the B-52’s first ship-killer

There is a historical echo here. In the 1980s, as the US Navy worried about Soviet bombers and surface groups swarming its carriers, a number of B-52Gs were modified to carry the AGM-84 Harpoon. Squadrons in Maine and on Guam trained to hit Soviet ships on the flanks of carrier battle groups, and B-52 crews practised low-level maritime profiles over open water.

A B-52 with an AGM-84A Harpoon on its wing pylon prepares to take off at Mather Air Force Base, California, in March 1983; Defense Department records describe the flight as a first Harpoon launch. The bomber had a maritime strike role long before LRASM. U.S. Department of Defense photo / public domain

The G models were scrapped under the START treaty after the Cold War, and the H models inherited the Harpoon capability along with a long list of other weapons. The difference now is range and survivability. A Harpoon has to be launched comparatively close to its target. LRASM is designed to cross a defended area, find its target with its own sensors and pick an aimpoint, which is exactly what a 1950s design cannot do for itself.

The bomber is also mid-way through the biggest refit of its career, with a new AESA radar and Rolls-Royce F130 engines on the way. Afterburner has followed the radar effort closely in B-52 Radar Modernization: $766 Million and Still Testing.

What we still do not know

Quite a lot. The notice gives no contract value and no schedule, and neither NAVAIR nor Air Force Life Cycle Management Center commented to Air & Space Forces Magazine. Lockheed spokesperson Scott Swofford deferred to the Pentagon on details, while describing LRASM as a precise, stealthy and survivable cruise missile.

Range is another open question. LRASM’s figure is not officially published; Air & Space Forces Magazine puts it just beyond 200 miles, close to the baseline JASSM, and other outlets report 200 to 300. A longer-ranged version has been discussed separately, and Lockheed’s new modular AGM-158 FLEX airframe, which we covered in AGM-158 FLEX: Lockheed’s JASSM With a Nose That Unclips, may yet offer an LRASM-style nose.

Then there is supply. Pentagon acquisition reports cited by Air & Space Forces Magazine say Lockheed had delivered 5,348 JASSMs to both services by April, with capacity of 600 a year and plans to reach 860. A Center for a New American Security report estimates the Air Force used about a quarter of its JASSM inventory during Operation Epic Fury. LRASM comes off the same production line, so every new launch platform competes for the same missiles.

Still, the direction is clear. B-52 LRASM integration turns a bomber the Air Force plans to keep flying until around 2050 into a long-range magazine for the one mission the Pacific is most likely to demand. Seventy-four years after first flight, the BUFF is being taught to hunt ships again.

Sources: NAVAIR special notice “LRASM B-52 Integration and Test Support”, N00019-26-RFPREQ-WPM201-0237, SAM.gov, 7 October 2026; Todd South, Air & Space Forces Magazine, 8 October 2026; Brian Everstine, Aviation Week, 7 October 2026; Xavier Vavasseur, Naval News, 5 November 2019; Joseph Trevithick and Howard Altman, TWZ, 29 June 2026; Lockheed Martin LRASM product page; Wikipedia, AGM-158C LRASM and Boeing B-52 Stratofortress.

<use href="#mfsh-i-share"/>Share this story

Frequently Asked Questions

<details open>
Is the B-52 getting the LRASM anti-ship missile?

Yes, according to a Naval Air Systems Command notice posted on 7 October 2026.
