Bosnian Serb soldiers walked past him. Some fired their rifles nearby. He ate leaves, grass and insects, and squeezed rainwater out of a sponge into plastic bags. He did not move, and he did not give up.<\/p>\r\n<p>His name was Captain Scott O'Grady, callsign Basher 52, and his rescue by U.S. Marines on 8 June 1995 became one of the defining moments of the war in the former Yugoslavia. Bob Wright, on a patrol enforcing the NATO no-fly zone over Bosnia and Herzegovina under Operation Deny Flight. Below them, a Bosnian Serb SA-6 surface-to-air missile battery had been moved into position and waited until the jets were almost directly overhead before firing.<\/p>\r\n<p>According to accounts of the engagement, one missile burst between the two fighters and another struck O'Grady's aircraft. Wright watched his wingman's F-16 erupt in flames and break apart. O'Grady ejected and drifted down into hostile territory, and in the confusion that followed nobody could be sure he was alive. He had completed a 17-day SERE course, the military's survival, evasion, resistance and escape school, at Fairchild Air Force Base near Spokane, Washington, the city where he had grown up. On the ground in Bosnia he stayed hidden by day, moved carefully, and lived on whatever he could find: leaves, grass and bugs, with rainwater collected in a sponge.<\/p>\r\n<p>He also had a survival radio, but using it carried risks. NATO aircraft picked up intermittent signals from his rescue beacon during the week, enough to keep the search alive but not enough to launch a rescue. Thomas \"T.O.\" Hanford, flying as Basher 11 with the 510th Fighter Squadron. He was near the limit of his fuel and under pressure to head home, but he kept searching, and O'Grady answered. That contact, just after midnight on 8 June, set the rescue in motion.<\/p>\r\n<p>At 04:40 local time, the order to execute went to Marine Col. Martin Berndt aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge in the Adriatic. Two <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/ch-53-sea-stallion\/\">CH-53 Sea Stallion<\/a> helicopters lifted off carrying 51 Marines of the 3rd Battalion, 8th Marines, part of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit. He came out of hiding, and Colonel Berndt pulled him aboard. The Marines were on the ground for roughly seven minutes. As the helicopters climbed away, Serb troops opened fire with small arms and shoulder-launched missiles. The missiles missed; rounds struck both helicopters, and one hit communications gear before stopping against the armour of Sgt. Maj. Angel Castro Jr.<\/p>\r\n<p>By 07:15 the force was \"feet wet\" over the Adriatic, and by 07:30 O'Grady was aboard Kearsarge.
