Yet the engines are silent. A machine built to cross oceans is being shoved backwards by a squat tractor barely taller than a car, while a ground handler under the nose talks to the captain through a cable plugged in near the nose gear.

Aircraft pushback is one of the most routine moments in aviation and one of the least understood. Why can a jet with tens of thousands of pounds of thrust not simply reverse out of its gate? Some once did. Rear-engined DC-9s and MD-80s used to back away from the terminal on their own reverse thrust, and the practice died out for good reasons.

This is how aircraft pushback really works: the two families of tug, the pins that protect the nose gear, the voice on the headset, and the electric machines that want to keep the engines switched off until the runway.

Quick Facts

What it is: Moving an aircraft backwards off its stand with ground equipment, under ATC clearance

Why jets don't reverse: The wheels are not driven; backing on reverse thrust (a powerback) throws jet blast and debris and burns fuel

Two kinds of tug: Conventional tugs with a type-specific towbar, and towbarless tugs that lift the nose wheel

Safety hardware: A steering bypass pin in the nose gear and a shear pin in the towbar

Who is in charge: The headset operator, linked to the cockpit by interphone, with wingwalkers watching the wings

Powerback era: Rear-engined jets such as the DC-9, MD-80 and 727; Northwest stopped in 2005, citing fuel

Engine-off towing: TaxiBot entered operations at Frankfurt in 2015; Air India used it on an A320 with passengers in 2019

Electric taxi: Honeywell left the EGTS venture in 2016; WheelTug is still chasing certification

Why a jet cannot simply drive backwards

An airliner's wheels are not powered. They roll freely, and the only things that can move the aircraft on its own are engines that push air backwards. To go astern, a crew would have to select reverse thrust, a manoeuvre known as a powerback.

Many types can do it, but airports and manufacturers discourage or forbid it. Reverse thrust next to a terminal blasts debris at buildings, vehicles and ground staff, and can suck stones and litter into the engines, adding wear that airlines later pay for in the engine shop.

There is a simpler problem too: the pilots cannot see behind the aircraft. So the jet is pushed by a tractor, and during an aircraft pushback it is the tug driver, not the flight crew, who steers.

Mentour Pilot explains why airliners are pushed back from the gate instead of reversing on their own.

Towbar tugs and the pin designed to break

The classic tug is a heavy, low-profile tractor joined to the nose gear by a towbar. Every aircraft type has its own tow fitting, so the bar doubles as an adapter between the tug and that particular nose leg, and works as a long lever to swing the nose wheel through turns. The tractor needs mass for traction, which is why big tugs are built like ballasted slabs of steel.

Each towbar contains a deliberate weak link: the shear pin. If the tug pushes, pulls or turns too hard, the pin snaps and frees the bar before the loads can damage the nose gear. Bristol Airport's pushback rules describe a red line oversteer indicator that must not be exceeded, warn that crossing it raises the risk of a shear pin failure or nose gear damage, and require an engineer to inspect the aircraft if it happens.

A KLM Boeing 777 is pushed back from its gate at Narita. With a conventional tug, a type-specific towbar links the tractor to the nose gear, and its shear pin is designed to snap before the gear is overloaded. It disconnects the gear from the aircraft's own nose-wheel steering, so the tug can turn the wheels without fighting the steering system. When the push is complete the pin comes out, and the ground handler holds it up so the pilots can see it has gone.

The headset operator runs the whole show. At Bristol, that person checks that the tug and towbar suit the aircraft, briefs the team, stays in continuous contact with the flight deck by interphone or hand signals, tells the tug driver when the brakes are released, and gives the final all-clear to taxi. Hand signals take over if a headset fails or a thunderstorm makes the cable unsafe to use.

Wingwalkers guard the rearward movement, with the job of preventing collisions with other aircraft, vehicles or obstacles. Bristol also requires its tug drivers to listen to the tower frequency and to start only when the headset instruction matches the controller's.

“Pushbacks shall never be commenced without ATC permission. At Bristol, the tower clears push and start in the same breath, and it is the headset operator who authorises each engine start at a suitable stage and calls a stop if it becomes unsafe.

Jet blast sets the limits. On many Bristol stands the crew may not start engines until the nose wheel sits on the tug release point, a yellow bar on the centreline. Pulling an aircraft forward after its engines are running is avoided where possible, because engine thrust can load the nose gear and towbar as the tug brakes.

The ending is pure choreography: parking brake set, tug disconnected, headset unplugged, bypass pin shown to the cockpit, and a final signal before the jet taxis away under its own power.

A standard Boeing 737-800 pushback filmed on the ramp, from hook-up to disconnect.

Towbarless tugs: lifting the nose off the ground

The alternative is the towbarless (TBL) tug. Instead of a bar, it clamps around the nose wheels and lifts them off the ground, so the tractor carries part of the aircraft's weight and steers it directly. There is no towbar to fetch, store or match to the aircraft type, and the shorter rig turns more precisely in tight corners.

Kalmar Motor, Goldhofer and TLD all build them. Kalmar Motor's technical sales manager Sean Bryan told Ground Handling International in 2024 that towbarless tractors can tow at close to taxiing speed and that one operator can often do a job that needs two or three people with a conventional tug. Kalmar says its electric TBL800EL can handle the Airbus A380.

Electric drive is the newest twist. In 2022 Lufthansa LEOS became launch customer for Goldhofer's all-electric Phoenix E, which Lufthansa says can move aircraft with a take-off weight of up to 352 tonnes. In September 2026 TLD reported a remote-controlled pushback of an Airbus A350-900 at Hong Kong International Airport, with its electric TPX-200-MTX-E steered by an operator on the ground through a portable wireless panel.

Powerback: when the MD-80 reversed itself

For decades, some airlines skipped the tug altogether. Rear-engined jets with clamshell or bucket thrust reversers, such as the Boeing 727, DC-9, MD-80 and Fokker 100, could back away from approved gates on reverse thrust alone. It saved waiting for a tug and needed fewer people on the ramp.

American Airlines' MD-80s and Northwest's DC-9s were among the last powerbacks in the United States. Northwest stopped in 2005, citing the need to save fuel, and by the mid-2000s the manoeuvre had largely disappeared as fuel prices climbed. Even at its height it was allowed only at specific gates, and many airlines banned it in rain or snow.

Just Planes footage of an MD-80 powerbacking away from the gate on reverse thrust, a sight that has all but vanished.

The objections never went away: debris hurled at the terminal and the ground crew, noise, and extra engine wear, which KLM cites as one reason it avoids the practice. Braking while rolling backwards can also tip a jet onto its tail. Military airlifters such as the C-17 can still back up under their own power, and their crews practise it for cramped airfields.

TaxiBot: a tug that drives to the runway

If a tug is better than the engines at the gate, why not let it tow the jet all the way to the runway? That is TaxiBot, a semi-robotic towbarless tractor developed by Israel Aerospace Industries with its partner TLD and with Lufthansa LEOS. After pushback, the pilot drives it from the cockpit: a cradle around the nose wheel senses the steering inputs and passes them to the tractor's eight wheels, while braking stays with the aircraft's own main gear.

EASA approved TaxiBot for the Boeing 737 family in late 2014, and on 19 February 2015 Lufthansa LEOS showed it in real flight operations at Frankfurt, towing a Lufthansa 737 to the take-off position with its engines off. IAI describes the tractor as an 800 hp hybrid-electric machine, and Lufthansa estimated it could save up to 2,700 tonnes of fuel a year at its Frankfurt hub.

TaxiBot towing a Corendon Dutch Airlines Boeing 737 during Schiphol's 2020 trial. Credit: Royal Schiphol Group

On 15 October 2019, Air India flight AI665 from Delhi to Mumbai became, by Air India's account, the first Airbus aircraft anywhere to be towed by TaxiBot with passengers aboard, with the engines started only at the runway. Air India said the system could cut taxiing fuel by up to 85 per cent.

Amsterdam Schiphol trialled TaxiBot in 2020 with Corendon Dutch Airlines, KLM, Transavia and easyJet. Schiphol's partners estimated savings of 50 to 85 per cent of the fuel normally burned while taxiing, because the engines still need time to warm up before take-off.

“The development of the TaxiBot represents a milestone in environmentally friendly aircraft ground operations at airports.”
Peter Unger — Managing Director, Lufthansa LEOS, IAI press release, 19 February 2015

Electric taxi: motors inside the wheels

The most radical answer puts the motor in the aircraft itself. Honeywell and Safran's Electric Green Taxiing System (EGTS) mounted electric motors in the inboard main wheels, powered by the auxiliary power unit's generator, so a jet could push back and taxi without its main engines. It was demonstrated on an Airbus A320 at the 2013 Paris Air Show.

The business case depended on expensive fuel. In July 2016 Honeywell walked away from the joint venture, citing low oil prices. Safran carried on alone, and Airbus withdrew its interest in 2019.

WheelTug, the other contender, replaces the nose wheels with units containing electric motors, again powered by the APU, and targets the Boeing 737NG. The FAA accepted its certification plan in December 2016, yet the promised service-entry dates have slipped again and again. In 2024 chief executive Isaiah Cox told The National he expected entry into service in 2026, with Spain's AlbaStar lined up as the first operator if certification went to plan.

“Land the plane and WheelTug will take you in [to the gate] and WheelTug will drive you out.”
Isaiah Cox — Chief Executive, WheelTug, interview with The National, 2024

Until one of these systems goes mainstream, the old method still wins. Every aircraft pushback still comes down to a heavy tractor, a steering pin, a headset cable and a handful of people on the ramp who never let the jet move until everyone is clear.

It looks like the dullest minute of any flight. It is actually the only part of the journey in which the pilots hand control of their aircraft to someone standing on the ground.

Sources: Bristol Airport (Operational Safety Instruction BRS-OSI-GO-017), Israel Aerospace Industries, Lufthansa Group, Ground Handling International, Airport Improvement, AIN, AviationPros, Aviation Today, The National, WheelTug, DT Next, Avgeekery, Wikipedia

<use href="#mfsh-i-share"/>Share this story

Frequently Asked Questions

<details open>
What is aircraft pushback?

Aircraft pushback is the procedure that moves an airliner backwards from its parking stand to a point where it can taxi forward on its own.
