The bridge\u2019s span rose only a few tens of metres above the river. Privalov brought the MiG-17 down almost to the surface and lined it up with the central arch, then held it there \u2014 dead level, wings clear of the water below and the steel above \u2014 as the aircraft covered the width of the bridge in a heartbeat. Some accounts describe a dare among pilots; others hint at a private, emotional motive that sent Privalov looking for a way to prove something to himself.
