Sur le papier, elle devait voler plus haut et plus loin que presque n&#039;importe quel autre appareil. Hughes, pilote v\u00e9ritablement dou\u00e9, tenait absolument \u00e0 en \u00eatre le premier \u00e0 le prouver.<\/p><h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Soixante-quinze minutes avant la catastrophe<\/h2>\r\n<p>Il a rompu le plan presque imm\u00e9diatement. L&#039;essai pr\u00e9voyait un vol court et prudent, train d&#039;atterrissage sorti. Au lieu de cela, Hughes a rentr\u00e9 le train, emport\u00e9 beaucoup plus de carburant que pr\u00e9vu et est rest\u00e9 en vol. Puis, plus d&#039;une heure apr\u00e8s le d\u00e9collage, une panne est survenue au niveau du syst\u00e8me d&#039;h\u00e9lice du moteur droit.<\/p>\r\n<p>Une fuite hydraulique a provoqu\u00e9 l&#039;inversion du pas de l&#039;h\u00e9lice arri\u00e8re droite. Soudain, un c\u00f4t\u00e9 de l&#039;appareil s&#039;est mis \u00e0 tra\u00eener comme une ancre, faisant pivoter le nez et l&#039;entra\u00eenant vers le bas. L&#039;avion traversa le quartier et prit feu. Des br\u00fblures, une plaie thoracique fractur\u00e9e, un poumon perfor\u00e9 et de nombreuses c\u00f4tes cass\u00e9es l&#039;ont clou\u00e9 au lit pendant des mois. Toujours aussi ing\u00e9nieux, il a mis ce temps \u00e0 profit pour concevoir un lit d&#039;h\u00f4pital motoris\u00e9, command\u00e9 par boutons \u2013 un dispositif complexe et ing\u00e9nieux, souvent consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme ayant influenc\u00e9 les lits r\u00e9glables utilis\u00e9s aujourd&#039;hui dans les h\u00f4pitaux. Malheureusement, les analg\u00e9siques prescrits durant ces mois allaient le poursuivre toute sa vie.<\/p>\r\n<p>L&#039;histoire conna\u00eet une fin plus paisible. Un second XF-11, \u00e9quip\u00e9 d&#039;h\u00e9lices simples classiques au lieu des h\u00e9lices contrarotatives probl\u00e9matiques, effectua son vol sans incident en avril 1947. Le monde avait alors \u00e9volu\u00e9 et le programme fut abandonn\u00e9.
