The <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/aircraft\/tu-160-blackjack\/\">Tupolev Tu-160<\/a> impresses first by its sheer dimensions. At 54.1 metres (177 ft 6 in) it is longer than a Boeing B-52, and when its wings are spread it measures 55.7 metres (182 ft 9 in) from tip to tip. Painted in anti-flash white, it earned from its crews the nickname &ldquo;Belyy Lebed,&rdquo; the White Swan. To NATO planners it was simply &ldquo;Blackjack.&rdquo; By any name, it remains the largest and heaviest combat aircraft ever built, and the heaviest supersonic aircraft ever to fly.<\/p>\n<p>It is worth pausing on that claim, because superlatives are cheap in aviation writing and this one is earned. Maximum take-off weight is 275,000 kg (606,000 lb). Empty, the airframe weighs well over a hundred tonnes, of which roughly 30 per cent is titanium. The resemblance ends at the surface. The Tu-160 is considerably larger, and where the B-1B abandoned its original Mach 2 ambition in favour of a lower radar signature, the Tupolev kept its variable intake ramps and its high-speed mission. It moves through three settings: 20 degrees fully forward for take-off, landing and economical flight; 35 degrees for high-subsonic cruise; and 65 degrees, swept hard back, for the supersonic dash. Forward-spread, the long wing gives lift and efficiency; swept, it reduces drag and lets the aircraft accelerate through the sound barrier. The whole aircraft is flown through a quadruple-redundant fly-by-wire system, which is just as well, because it is aerodynamically unstable and would be a considerable handful without it.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Four engines, and a great deal of thrust<\/h2>\n<p>Power comes from four Kuznetsov NK-32 afterburning turbofans, mounted in pairs beneath the wing gloves. Each produces roughly 137 kN (30,900 lbf) dry and about 245 kN (55,000 lbf) in full afterburner. Taken together, that is some 220,000 lbf of thrust, the most powerful engine installation ever fitted to a combat aircraft. Thirteen fuel tanks feed them, and a retractable probe in the nose allows air-to-air refuelling.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;The Tu-160 is the heaviest and most powerful combat aircraft in the world today.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Niels Hillebrand<\/strong> &mdash; aviation writer, MILAVIA<\/div><\/div>\n\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Speed, altitude and reach<\/h2>\n<p>With the wings swept and the afterburners lit, the Tu-160 reaches Mach 2.05, about 2,220 km\/h (1,380 mph), at around 12,200 metres (40,000 ft). Its service ceiling is near 16,000 metres (52,000 ft), and its unrefuelled range is about 12,300 km (7,600 mi). In 1989 and 1990 the type set 44 recognised world records for speed and altitude in its weight class. Its chief designer, Valentin Bliznyuk, shepherded it from concept to squadron service. Decades on, the aircraft has not been retired but renewed: the modernised Tu-160M, with updated engines, radar and avionics, is in production, and the first newly-built example took to the air on 12 January 2022. For an aircraft first sketched in the 1970s to remain the largest, heaviest and fastest combat type in the sky is a quiet testament to how right the original engineering was.
