Air China Links Beijing and Zagreb for the First Time

On 4 September 2026, an Air China Airbus A330-200 is scheduled to lift off from Beijing, stop for three hours in Bucharest, and continue to Zagreb. When it lands, Croatia will have a scheduled year-round air link to mainland China for the first time.

The service runs three times a week — Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays — and it does two jobs at once. It reconnects Air China with Bucharest, a city the airline last served until March 1994, and it opens Zagreb to a market that has been sending Croatia a steadily rising number of visitors.

More than 330,000 Chinese tourists visited Croatia in 2025. Until now, every one of them arrived on a connection.

Itinerario: Beijing–Bucharest–Zagreb

Launch date: 4 September 2026

Frequenza: three times weekly, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays

Aeromobili: Airbus A330-200

Bucharest stop: around three hours in each direction

Prime volte: first scheduled year-round Beijing–Zagreb link; Air China’s return to Bucharest after 1994

Why route it through Bucharest

Zagreb is not a huge long-haul market on its own. Neither is Bucharest. Strung together on one widebody rotation, they become viable — the aircraft fills up on the long sector from Beijing and sheds and gains passengers in Romania.

Air China is also pursuing fifth freedom traffic rights on the Bucharest–Zagreb leg. If regulators approve, the airline could sell tickets purely between the Romanian and Croatian capitals — a city pair with no nonstop service at present. That would make a Chinese carrier a local operator inside the European Union, which is the part of this story most likely to irritate European airlines.

A diplomatic project as much as a commercial one

The route was presented in Beijing and confirmed by Croatia’s Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, which is a clue to how it came together. Chang Jian, deputy director general of the Chinese Foreign Ministry’s Department of European Affairs, described the link as long-awaited and credited joint work by China, Romania and Croatia.

“This is truly a historic moment for Croatia, since China and Croatia, namely the capitals Beijing and Zagreb, will be connected by a year-around regular air route for the first time.”
Dario Mihelin — Croatian Ambassador to China

Croatian officials have talked up the cargo and trade possibilities alongside tourism, pointing to cheese, tuna, olive oil and wine as products with room to grow in the Chinese market. Whether a three-times-weekly passenger widebody moves much of that is another matter, but belly cargo on a long-haul A330 is not nothing.

For Zagreb Airport the practical effect is straightforward: it becomes the third widebody operation on the field, and the second East Asian airline alongside South Korea’s T’way Air. For an airport of its size, that is a meaningful step up.

The real test comes in the winter. Plenty of ambitious long-haul routes into secondary European capitals have launched in September and quietly disappeared by March. This one has diplomatic weight behind it, which tends to buy a route more patience than the spreadsheet alone would.

Domande frequenti

When does the Beijing to Zagreb flight start?
4 September 2026, operating three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Is the flight non-stop?
No. It routes via Bucharest, with a scheduled stop of around three hours in each direction.
What aircraft operates the route?
An Airbus A330-200.
Why is this route significant for Croatia?
It is the first scheduled year-round air link between Croatia and mainland China. More than 330,000 Chinese tourists visited Croatia in 2025, and until now every one of them arrived on a connection.
What are fifth freedom rights, and why do they matter here?
Fifth freedom rights would let Air China sell tickets purely between Bucharest and Zagreb, without the passenger travelling to or from China. The airline is pursuing them. If granted, a Chinese carrier would effectively be operating as a local airline inside the European Union.
Has Air China served Bucharest before?
Yes, but not for a long time. The airline last served Bucharest until March 1994, so this marks a return after more than thirty years.
