Rafale: Omnirole, Combat-Proven and Exported, but Not in Ukraine

A post circulating on Instagram sums up the Dassault Rafale as the ultimate “omnirole” fighter: carrier operations, nuclear strike, close air support and air superiority “from a single airframe without configuration changes”, combat-proven from Afghanistan to Ukraine, and exported to six countries. The Rafale’s record is impressive, but three parts of that summary are wrong or out of date.

  • Produttore: Dassault Aviation, France
  • Varianti: Rafale C (single-seat), B (two-seat), M (carrier)
  • Ruolo nucleare: ASMP-A missile, carried by air force and navy Rafales
  • Combattere: Afghanistan, Libya, Mali, Iraq, Syria, India (2025); drone interceptions over Jordan and the UAE
  • Export customers: Egypt, Qatar, India, Greece, Croatia, Indonesia, UAE, Serbia, Ukraine

One Family, Three Airframes

“Omnirole” is Dassault’s own marketing term for flying several kinds of mission in a single sortie, and the Rafale does that well. But it is not one airframe. The air force flies the single-seat Rafale C and two-seat Rafale B; the navy flies the Rafale M, which has a reinforced undercarriage, an arrestor hook and a “jump strut” nosewheel, weighs about 500 kg more and shares around 95 percent of its parts with the land-based versions. Only the M operates from carriers.

The Rafale M does carry the ASMP-A nuclear missile, and a navy Rafale fired one in a simulated nuclear strike in February 2017. But a nuclear mission needs a dedicated ASMP-A loadout, so “without configuration changes” is not right either. And the claim that no other fighter in service can match it ignores multirole carrier jets such as the F-35C and F/A-18E/F.

Where the Rafale Has Fought

The Rafale’s combat record is long. It first dropped weapons in Afghanistan on 28 March 2007 and was based at Kandahar from 2009 to 2011. It flew from the first day of the 2011 Libya campaign on 19 March, over Mali from January 2013, and in Iraq and Syria from September 2014, including the April 2018 strikes in Syria. Indian Rafales flew in Operation Sindoor in May 2025, where France’s air force chief said he had seen evidence that one was lost; India has not confirmed it. Rafales have also shot down drones over Jordan in April 2024 and over the UAE in March 2026.

The Rafale has not, however, fought in Ukraine. French Rafales have flown air policing over Poland, including after the Russian drone incursions of September 2025. Ukraine is a customer rather than a combat theatre: it signed a letter of intent for up to 100 Rafales on 17 November 2025, ordered a first batch of 16 in July 2026 and expects deliveries by 2028. We covered the start of Ukrainian pilot training in Rafale for Ukraine.

Nine Export Customers, Not Six

The caption lists Egypt, India, Qatar, Greece, Indonesia and the UAE. It leaves out three. The full list of export customers is: Egypt (54 aircraft), Qatar (36), India (36 for the air force and 26 Rafale M for the navy), Greece (24), Croatia (12 second-hand), Indonesia (42), the UAE (80 Rafale F4), Serbia (12, ordered in August 2024) and Ukraine (16 ordered so far). A further 114 for India have been approved in principle but not signed.

Verdict

The Rafale is a genuinely versatile fighter with real combat in five theatres before 2025, and its export success is real. But it is a family of three variants, not one airframe; nuclear strike needs its own loadout; it has not flown combat in Ukraine; and it has nine export customers, not six.

Domande frequenti

What does omnirole mean for the Rafale?
Omnirole is Dassault’s marketing term for the Rafale’s ability to fly several different mission types, such as air defence, strike and reconnaissance, in the same sortie. Other fighters, including the F-35 and F/A-18E/F, are also multirole.
Is the Rafale M the same as the Rafale C?
No. The Rafale M carrier version has a reinforced undercarriage, an arrestor hook and a jump-strut nosewheel, weighs about 500 kg more and shares about 95 percent of its parts with the land-based Rafale C and B. Only the Rafale M operates from aircraft carriers.
Has the Rafale been used in combat in Ukraine?
No. The Rafale has not flown combat in Ukraine. French Rafales have flown air policing over Poland. Ukraine signed a letter of intent for up to 100 Rafales in November 2025 and ordered a first batch of 16 in July 2026, with deliveries expected by 2028.
Where has the Rafale seen combat?
The Rafale has flown combat in Afghanistan from 2007, Libya in 2011, Mali from 2013, and Iraq and Syria from 2014. Indian Rafales flew in Operation Sindoor in May 2025, and Rafales have shot down drones over Jordan in 2024 and the UAE in 2026.
Which countries have bought the Rafale?
Nine countries have ordered the Rafale for export: Egypt, Qatar, India, Greece, Croatia, Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates, Serbia and Ukraine. The UAE has the largest order, 80 Rafale F4s.
Can the Rafale carry nuclear weapons?
Yes. French Air and Space Force and French Navy Rafales carry the ASMP-A nuclear cruise missile, and a Rafale M fired one in a simulated nuclear strike in February 2017. Nuclear missions use a dedicated loadout.
