That changed at a hotel ballroom in Dhaka, where the country&rsquo;s largest private airline quietly placed the biggest bet of its twelve-year life.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>At the &ldquo;Beyond with Boeing&rdquo; event on 29 July, US-Bangla Airlines announced it will add 21 Boeing narrowbodies &mdash; 15 of the latest 737 MAX 8s and six 737-800s &mdash; in lease deals worth roughly US$1.5 billion. This order is the airline telling the region it intends to keep going. The plan is to turn Dhaka, Chattogram and Sylhet into genuine hubs and to stop watching foreign airlines carry away the bulk of a home market worth an estimated US$5.8 billion a year.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The 21 jets are being sourced through five international leasing companies rather than bought outright &mdash; a sensible way for a fast-growing carrier to add metal without swallowing the full capital cost up front. On the wish list, subject to regulatory approval: Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Colombo, Kathmandu, Beijing, Penang, Kuwait and Madinah. Longer term, the airline is openly eyeing widebodies for long-haul flights to Europe and North America.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">A bigger Bangladeshi bet<\/h2>\r\n\r\n<p>The timing is not a coincidence. The deal lands alongside a separate government agreement for 14 Boeing jets for the national carrier, Biman Bangladesh, and a new third terminal opening at Dhaka&rsquo;s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. Put together, it is a country deciding it would rather own more of its own aviation future than rent it from foreign airlines.
