It stretches about 54 metres nose to tail &mdash; longer than a <a href=\"https:\/\/migflug.com\/afterburner\/it\/aerei\/b-52-stratofortress\/\">B-52 Stratofortress<\/a> &mdash; with a wingspan of nearly 56 metres when the wings are spread and around 35 metres when they are swept back for high speed. Empty, it weighs 110 tonnes; loaded, it tips the scales near 275. Roughly a third of its structure is titanium.<\/p>\r\n<p>That makes it the largest and heaviest combat aircraft ever to fly, and the heaviest supersonic aircraft of any kind. Photo: Wikimedia Commons<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">Four engines built for brute force<\/h2><p>The secret to moving 275 tonnes at twice the speed of sound is propulsion, and the Tu-160 carries four Kuznetsov NK-32 afterburning turbofans &mdash; widely described as the most powerful engines ever fitted to a combat aircraft. Serial production began at Kazan in 1984 and the type entered service in 1987 &mdash; but the Soviet Union collapsed before the plan for 100 bombers could be met, and only about 36 were built. Nineteen were stranded in newly independent Ukraine; eight were flown back to Russia in 2000 to settle a gas debt, and most of the rest were scrapped.<\/p>\r\n<p>The survivors found a second life. The Tu-160 made its combat debut over Syria in 2015, launching cruise missiles, and Russia has since restarted production of a deeply modernized version, the Tu-160M. In February 2024, President Vladimir Putin flew in one himself.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;The technology is excellent. It is a missile truck: it stays far from its targets and lobs long-range cruise missiles from safe distance, letting the weapons make the dangerous final run.
