The Beriev Be-200 does it all on jet power. It skims a lake at nearly 220 km\/h, swallows 12 tonnes of water in seconds, then climbs away and races to the next drop faster than any other firefighting aircraft in the world.<\/p>\r\n<p>It is the only jet-engined amphibian in series production &mdash; a genuinely remarkable machine. Where its rivals use turboprops, the Be-200 mounts two turbofans high on the wing, clear of spray, and can operate from a runway or any stretch of open water at least 2.6 metres deep. To load, it drops onto the surface, extends scoops, and skims along swallowing water before hauling itself back into the air.<\/p>\r\n<p>The payoff is speed. A conventional water bomber ambles between the lake and the fire; the Be-200 sprints. Russia&rsquo;s EMERCOM leased its jets to Portugal, Greece, Italy and Indonesia during their fire seasons, and sent them to Israel to help fight the deadly 2010 Mount Carmel blaze near Haifa. Wherever big wildfires burned, the fast Russian amphibian was a coveted guest.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uDzGfDUN6Z0\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0;border-radius:8px\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">The engine that became a weakness<\/h2><p>Then geopolitics caught up with it. The Be-200&rsquo;s D-436TP engines are Ukrainian &mdash; designed by Ivchenko-Progress and built by Motor Sich. After Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, that cooperation unravelled, and by 2016 the engine supply had dried up. Spare parts followed, and one by one the fleet was grounded. By 2024, of the roughly 20 Be-200s ever built, only about ten were still airworthy anywhere in the world.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #d32f2f;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7\"><em>&ldquo;The engine, which was once a strong point of the aircraft, quickly became its weakness.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Babak Taghvaee<\/strong> &mdash; aviation journalist, AerialFire<\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>US sanctions after the 2022 invasion made things worse, effectively barring European countries such as Portugal and Greece from leasing the jets even as their forests burned.
