Seconds after lift-off, at only about 150 metres, the afterburner cut out and he saw smoke. Convinced the engine had failed and the jet was going down, he ejected.<\/p><p>He was wrong. Lightened by the loss of the pilot and heavy ejection seat, the MiG stopped descending, pitched up, and climbed away on its own. USAF Captains J.D. Martin and Bill Murphy of the 32nd Tactical Fighter Squadron &mdash; the &ldquo;Wolfhounds&rdquo; at Soesterberg &mdash; were launched to intercept. When they slid into formation, they realised the canopy and the pilot were simply gone.<\/p>\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #1565c0;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;You&rsquo;re looking at a MiG-23 just like the pictures you&rsquo;ve studied your entire fighter pilot life, but it just doesn&rsquo;t add up. What&rsquo;s he doing here? Why is he alone?&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Capt. Bill &ldquo;Turf&rdquo; Murphy<\/strong> &mdash; USAF F-15C pilot, 32nd TFS, in F-15 Eagle Engaged<\/div><\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>Ground controllers refused to believe it. Photo: Wikimedia Commons<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<h2 style=\"padding-top:22px\">A terrible ending<\/h2><p>As the MiG finally ran its tanks dry near 40,000 feet, it began a shallow descent toward the French-Belgian border. The Eagle pilots were even cleared to shoot it down &mdash; but only if that would cause less harm than letting it fall. They judged it would come down short of the city of Lille, in open country, and held their fire.<\/p><p>The MiG glided down in an eerily perfect gear-up attitude and struck a house in Bellegem, near Kortrijk, Belgium. Inside was 18-year-old Wim Delaere, who was killed. A Soviet fighter had crossed a continent on its own and taken an innocent life at the end of it.<\/p>\r\n<div style=\"position:relative;padding-bottom:56.25%;height:0;overflow:hidden;margin:24px 0\"><iframe class=\"skip-lazy\" data-no-lazy=\"1\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MB2W1HtYY50\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;border:0;border-radius:8px\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n<p>Colonel Skuridin, who had ejected believing his aircraft was doomed, was devastated when he learned what it had done.<\/p>\r\n<div style=\"background:#f8f9fa;border-left:4px solid #d32f2f;padding:20px 22px;margin:18px 0 24px;border-radius:0 8px 8px 0;font-size:16px;line-height:1.7;display:flex;gap:20px;align-items:flex-start\"><div><em>&ldquo;If I could have foreseen such tragic consequences to this pilotless flight, I would have stayed in the plane to the end.&rdquo;<\/em><div style=\"margin-top:10px;font-size:14px;color:#555\"><strong>Col.
